Chapter 2 - Shadows at the Door

The sudden sound shattered the delicate silence of the house.
Anthony's posture changed instantly. The regretful, longing father vanished, replaced in a microsecond by the lethal capo who had ruled Boston's underworld for a decade. His body tensed, his eyes turning to ice as he shifted his position to place himself between the front door and the hallway leading to the kitchen.
"Are you expecting someone?" Anthony asked, his voice a low, commanding growl.
Emily looked startled, shaking her head. "No. My neighbors are out of town. Nobody comes here this late on Christmas Eve."
"Stay behind me," Anthony ordered.
He reached into his tailored coat, his hand gripping the custom 9mm handgun holstered beneath his left arm. He walked silently across the hardwood floor toward the door, peering through the small decorative glass pane.
Outside on the snow-covered porch stood a tall man in a heavy leather jacket. Beneath the streetlamp at the edge of the driveway, a black sedan was idling, its exhaust fumes rising into the freezing night air.
Anthony recognized the man instantly. It was Marco Moretti—the ruthless younger brother of his rival, Dominic Moretti.
Anthony’s blood ran cold. The Moretti family had been quietly rebuilding their strength in Rhode Island for the past three years. If Marco was standing on Emily's porch on Christmas Eve, it wasn't a coincidence.
"Emily," Anthony whispered without turning around, his hand drawing the weapon smoothly from its holster, keeping it hidden behind his leg. "Take Noah. Go upstairs to the master bedroom. Lock the door and do not come out until I tell you to."
Emily's eyes widened in terror as she saw the dark metal of the gun in his hand. "Anthony... who is it?"
"Do it now!" Anthony commanded, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Emily didn't hesitate. She turned and ran toward the kitchen, scooping up a confused Noah into her arms and sprinting toward the stairs just as Marco knocked again, harder this time.
"Anthony Duca!" Marco's voice carried through the heavy oak door, mocking and loud. "I know you're in there! Your driver didn't do a very good job hiding your fancy Mercedes down the street!"
Anthony unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open just wide enough to stand in the frame, blocking the view of the house's interior.
"Marco," Anthony said, his tone flat and unbothered. "You're a long way from Providence."
Marco smiled, exposing a set of nicotine-stained teeth. He was flanked by two broad-shouldered enforcers with their hands buried deep in their coat pockets.
"Just following the chief," Marco chuckled, blowing a cloud of gray smoke into the freezing air. "When my guys spotted the great Anthony Duca driving out to the suburbs all by himself on Christmas Eve without his usual squad of goons, my brother thought it was worth investigating. We wondered what kind of treasure you were hiding out here in the quiet woods."
Marco tried to peer past Anthony's shoulder into the warm hallway, but Anthony shifted his weight, completely obstructing the view.
"You're trespassing on private property, Marco," Anthony said coldly. "And you're ruining a quiet night. Turn around, get back in your car, and go home to your family."
"We checked the town records, Anthony," Marco sneered, taking a half-step forward on the porch. "This house belongs to Emily Carter. Your ex-wife. The woman who walked out on you seven years ago. But what's really interesting is the school registration records for this district. A seven-year-old boy named Noah Carter."
Anthony’s heart pounded violently against his ribs, but his face remained a mask of stone. "She remarried. It's none of your business."
"Is that so?" Marco grinned maliciously. "Because we took a look at a picture from the school yearbook. The kid looks an awful lot like you, Duca. The same cold eyes. Imagine what Dominic could do with a bargaining chip like that. We could end the Boston border dispute by tomorrow morning."
The moment Marco uttered the threat against his son, the last restraint holding Anthony back vanished.
With terrifying speed, Anthony stepped forward, slammed his heavy boots onto the porch, grabbed Marco by the throat with his left hand, and drove him backward against the porch railing. In the same motion, Anthony brought his 9mm up, pressing the cold steel barrel directly under Marco's jawline.
The two enforcers instantly reached for their weapons, but Anthony spoke before they could draw.
"Pull those guns," Anthony growled into Marco's face, "and your boss will be picking his brother's brain off this porch before you can clear leather."
Marco went stiff, his breathing shallow as he felt the heavy pressure against his throat. "You're crazy, Duca... you're surrounded..."
"Listen to me very carefully, Marco," Anthony whispered, his gray eyes flashing with a primal, predatory fury that made Marco's smile completely disappear. "If you ever come near this house again, if you ever look at my ex-wife, or if you even breathe the name of that child again, I will hunt down every person who shares your last name and erase them from this city. Do you understand me?"
Marco swallowed hard, nodding as much as the steel under his jaw allowed. "Yeah... yeah, I hear you, Anthony."
"Get off my property," Anthony said, shoving Marco backward.
Marco stumbled, catching his balance against the steps. He motioned frantically to his two men. "Let's go! Move!"
They retreated down the snow-covered path, scrambling into the idling sedan and speeding away down the quiet suburban street, their tires screeching against the ice.

Anthony stood on the porch until the red taillights vanished into the dark night. He took a deep breath, holstered his weapon, and stepped back inside, locking the door securely behind him.
He turned around and saw Emily standing at the top of the stairs, holding a baseball bat, her whole body shaking violently.
