Chapter 5 - A Home Built on Truth

Three months passed.
The news of the scandal surrounding Rivas Enterprises had rocked Mexico City’s high society, dominating headlines for weeks. Mauricio had been sentenced to fifteen years in federal prison without parole after pleading guilty to embezzlement and extortion charges. Doña Victoria, due to her advanced age and cooperation with prosecutors, was spared prison time but placed under house arrest at her private residence, stripped of all corporate titles and authority.
The dark clouds that had hung over Alejandro’s life for four years had finally cleared, leaving behind a clean, honest sky.
It was a warm Saturday morning in Valle de Bravo.
The country house by the lake had been completely transformed. The old, dusty rooms were now painted in bright, warm colors. High-quality children's furniture filled the bedrooms, and the wide living room was scattered with coloring books, plush toys, and vibrant paintings of butterflies and flowers.
Outside on the wooden porch, the lake glistened under the bright morning sun.
Alejandro sat on a wooden bench, wearing a simple linen shirt and jeans. On his lap sat Sol, who was happily eating a thick slice of freshly baked banana bread, her mouth covered in crumbs.
"More?" Sol asked, holding up her small hand.
"After lunch, little princess," Alejandro laughed softly, wiping her cheek with a napkin.
A few feet away, Luna was running through the green grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Alejandro had adopted for them a week ago. Her laughter echoed over the quiet water—a sound so pure, so alive, that it made Alejandro’s heart swell with profound gratitude.
A car pulled up the gravel driveway.
Roberto Valenzuela stepped out, carrying a thin leather document folder under his arm. He walked up the wooden steps, smiling warmly as he saw the children.
"Uncle Roberto!" Luna cheered, running over and hugging the lawyer’s leg.
"Hello, sweet Luna," Roberto smiled, patting her head before looking up at Alejandro. "I brought the final papers from the family court judge."
Alejandro stood up, setting Sol safely on the bench. "Is it done?"
Roberto opened the folder, pulling out a official decree bearing the red seal of the State of Mexico.
"As of nine o'clock this morning," Roberto announced proudly, "you are officially the legal adoptive father and guardian of Luna and Sol Rivas. Their full legal names are now Luna and Sol Rivas-Webb."
Alejandro took the paper. His hand trembled slightly as he read the words Legal Father. A single tear slipped down his cheek, dripping onto the clean white paper.
"Thank you, Roberto," Alejandro whispered, his voice thick with emotion. "For everything."
"You did this, Alejandro," Roberto said softly, placing a hand on his friend's shoulder. "You saved them. And if you ask me... they saved you too."
Alejandro looked out toward the lake.

For two years after Mariana’s death, he had walked through this world like a ghost—a wealthy man living in an empty house, surrounded by money that brought him no peace, drowning in a grief that had no end. He had come to Valle de Bravo to say a final goodbye to his life.
Instead, he had found two barefoot little girls clutching a stale piece of bread.
