Chapter 4 - The Unraveling

Mauricio slammed his hand onto the table, his face flushed with anger. "Security! Remove these children from the corporate floor immediately!"

"The security guards on this floor answer to the CEO, Mauricio," Alejandro said, his voice cutting through the room like a diamond. "And last time I checked, I own sixty percent of this company. Sit down."

Mauricio hesitated, glancing nervously at the board members who were staring at the two little girls in fascination.

"Members of the board," Alejandro announced, standing at the foot of the table, his arms crossed over his chest. "My mother has called this meeting to claim I am mentally unfit. She claims these two little girls are street beggars brought here to extort our family."

Alejandro reached out, gently picking up Luna and setting her standing safely on the edge of the conference table, right in front of Doña Victoria.

"Look at her, Mother," Alejandro demanded softly. "Look at her eyes. Look at her hair. Tell the board who she looks like."

Several older board members leaned forward, their eyes widening in shock.

"My God..." whispered Don Fernando, a senior shareholder who had been with the company for thirty years. "She looks exactly like Mercedes. Like a young Mercedes."

"That is absurd!" Patricia shouted from the corner of the room, her voice screeching. "It’s a trick! Anyone can find blonde orphans in Mexico!"

"Roberto," Alejandro signaled.

Roberto Valenzuela stepped forward, opening his leather briefcase and pulling out a stack of certified legal documents. He laid them out across the mahogany table in front of every board member.

"These are the certified results of a rapid DNA test conducted yesterday by the top forensic lab in Mexico City," Roberto announced clearly. "The DNA samples taken from Luna and Sol Rivas-Webb show a 99.9% maternal match to the late Mercedes Webb... and a 50% familial match to Alejandro Rivas as their biological uncle."

The boardroom erupted into loud chatter.

Doña Victoria’s hands trembled violently on the table. "Mercedes... Mercedes died?"

"You knew she was dying, Mother!" Alejandro’s voice thundered across the room, shattering the remaining composure in the space. "You and Mauricio chased her across this country for four years! You cut off her inheritance, you froze her accounts, and you let her die in poverty because she found out what you did to Mariana!"

"That's a lie!" Mauricio screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Alejandro. "You have no proof! You can't prove anything!"

"Can't I?" Alejandro asked calmly.

He pulled a black USB drive from his pocket and tossed it onto the center of the table.

"On this drive are the international banking logs from HSBC in Switzerland," Alejandro declared. "Obtained three hours ago through an emergency federal subpoena filed by federal prosecutors. It details three million dollars embezzled from Mariana’s private medical trust fund directly into a shell company registered under the name of Mauricio Rivas."

Mauricio’s knees buckled. He stumbled backward, knocking over his leather chair, his face turned the gray color of wet ash.

"And there's one more thing," Alejandro added, his eyes burning with righteous fury. "Federal agents from the Attorney General's office are waiting downstairs in the lobby. Because two hours ago, my security team located Elena—Mercedes’s friend in Michoacán. She has given a sworn statement detailing four years of death threats, extortion, and harassment from men hired directly by Mauricio."

Right on cue, the double doors of the boardroom clicked open again.

Four uniformed officers from the Policía Federal walked into the room, led by a stern female lead investigator wearing a dark suit.

"Mauricio Rivas?" the lead investigator asked, her voice echoing coldly in the room.

Mauricio couldn't even speak. He collapsed onto the carpet, weeping hysterically like a child.

"You are under arrest for grand embezzlement, corporate fraud, and criminal conspiracy," the investigator stated, clicking a pair of steel handcuffs around Mauricio’s wrists.

Patricia screamed, clutching her head, while the board members watched in absolute horror as the former vice president of Rivas Enterprises was dragged out of the room in chains.

The lead investigator turned to Doña Victoria, who sat paralyzed in her chair, tears of shame finally spilling down her wrinkled cheeks.

"Doña Victoria Rivas," the investigator said softly. "You are required to accompany us to the federal prosecutor's office for questioning regarding criminal obstruction of justice and misprision of a felony."

Doña Victoria didn't fight. She stood up slowly, her proud posture completely shattered. She looked at Alejandro, her eyes filled with a desperate, pathetic plea for help.

"Alejandro... I am your mother..." she whispered.

Alejandro looked at her. There was no hatred in his eyes—only a vast, hollow sadness for the woman who had traded her family's soul for money and status.

May you like

"You ceased being my mother," Alejandro said quietly, "the day you chose money over Mariana's life and Mercedes's children."

Doña Victoria bowed her head and allowed the officers to escort her out of the room.
