Chapter 2 - The Red Notebook

The night settled heavy over Valle de Bravo. Outside, the rain turned into a downpour, pounding against the tin roof of the country house. Inside, the fireplace roared, casting warm golden light across the living room carpet.
The twins had been fed another warm meal of soup and soft bread. Now, wrapped in clean blankets on the sofa, they were fast asleep, their small faces peaceful for the first time in days, holding each other’s hands even in their slumber.
Alejandro sat at the wooden dining table under a single hanging lamp.
In front of him lay the purple backpack Luna had carried. Inside it, beneath a spare pair of worn socks and a plastic toy duck, was a small red leather-bound diary.
Alejandro’s hands shook as he opened the cover.
On the first page, written in familiar, frantic cursive handwriting, were the words: If I do not survive, give this to Alejandro Rivas. Only Alejandro.
It was Mercedes’s handwriting.
Alejandro turned the pages, reading through tears and rising horror as the timeline of a crime unfolded before his eyes.
March 14, 2022 Mariana is sick. The doctors say it’s aggressive, but something feels wrong. She got sick so quickly after Mauricio took over the healthcare procurement for the family foundation. Every time she takes the new imported vitamins he brought from Switzerland, her stomach cramps worsen. I tried to take a sample of the bottles to a private lab in Toluca today. Someone followed my car. I'm scared.
Alejandro gasped, pressing a hand against his mouth. His late wife, Mariana, had suffered for six brutal months from unexplained stomach lesions and organ failure. The doctors had ruled it an aggressive form of abdominal cancer. But Mercedes had suspected foul play from the very beginning.
He turned the page further.
August 22, 2022 Mariana died this morning. My heart is shattered into pieces. But I can't even mourn her because I found the transfer documents in Mauricio’s office drawer. He didn't just mismanage the foundation funds—he diverted three million dollars from Mariana’s private trust. Mother knows. Doña Victoria knows everything! She covered it up to protect Mauricio from going to prison. When I confronted them, Mother told me if I said a word to Alejandro, they would destroy me. They threatened to make me vanish.
November 10, 2022 I am pregnant. Twins. I am terrified. I fled Mexico City tonight with two suitcases. I am hiding in a small village near Michoacán under a fake name. I can't go to Alejandro yet—he is drowning in grief over Mariana, and Mauricio has guards monitoring his estate. I have to wait until the girls are safe. If anything happens to me, my friend Elena knows where to take them.
The last entry was dated just four days ago.
July 16, 2026 They found me. A black SUV with Mexico City plates was parked outside my house today. Mauricio’s men. My liver is failing—the stress and lack of medicine have caught up with me. I know I don't have many days left. Elena is taking Luna and Sol to Mariana’s country house in Valle de Bravo today. It’s the only place Alejandro goes when he wants to be alone. Please, God, let him be there. Please let him find my babies.
Alejandro closed the red notebook.
He leaned forward, placing his elbows on the table and burying his face in his hands. A raw, choked sob tore from his throat.
Mariana hadn't just died of natural causes—she had been systematically neglected, perhaps even poisoned, while her money was stolen by his own brother and mother. And Mercedes, innocent, terrified Mercedes, had spent four years living in poverty, hiding in fear, only to die alone in a remote village while sending her helpless toddlers to his doorstep as her final act of faith.
He stood up slowly, stepping over to the sofa where the twins slept.
He crouched down, brushing a stray blonde curl from Sol’s forehead, then gently kissing Luna’s cheek.
"I'm sorry," Alejandro whispered, his voice thick with tears and absolute vow. "I'm so sorry I wasn't there to save your mother. But I promise you... on my life, no one will ever hurt you again."
His phone rang on the table. The screen lit up with the name: LAWYER - VALENZUELA.
Alejandro walked back to the table and answered it.
"Alejandro," Roberto Valenzuela, his most trusted personal attorney and lifelong friend, spoke urgently over the line. "Where are you? Your mother just called my office demanding I freeze your personal accounts, claiming you’re suffering a psychological breakdown over Mariana’s memory!"
"Roberto," Alejandro said, his voice dropping into a steel-hard calm that made the lawyer pause on the other end. "I need you to bring two things to Valle de Bravo immediately."
"What things?"
"A private medical team specializing in pediatric care and DNA testing," Alejandro ordered. "And a team of heavily armed private security guards. The ones who answer only to me."

"Alejandro, what's going on?"
"My brother and my mother are about to pay for everything they’ve done," Alejandro said quietly. "And I’m going to make sure they never see the light of day again."
