Chapter 2 - The Security Vault

By 2:00 AM, the grand manor was completely dark, but the lights inside Julian and Emily’s private suite on the eastern wing were burning bright.

Emily sat on the edge of the plush velvet bed, sipping a warm cup of chamomile tea, while Julian knelt on the floor in front of her, gently rubbing her swollen ankles. His corporate mask was completely gone, leaving only a husband who was deeply terrified for his family's safety.

"I don't trust her, Emily," Julian said, his voice a low, rough whisper. "Thomas and Victoria have been drowning in debt from their failed real estate investments in Europe. They need my grandfather’s inheritance to survive. If you say you felt a hand on your back... I believe you."

"Believing me isn't enough to satisfy the board of directors or your grandfather, Julian," Emily said, setting her teacup down on the nightstand. "Victoria is a master of playing the victim. If we accuse her without absolute proof, she will claim we are trying to slander her to secure a larger share of the estate. We need the security footage from the second-floor corridor."

Julian’s face darkened. "I already checked the main security hub in the basement before I came upstairs. Thomas had the technician take the western corridor cameras offline for 'routine maintenance' between 8:00 PM and 10:00 PM tonight. The footage from the time of your slip is completely blank."

Emily let out a soft, knowing chuckle. She reached into her silk robe, pulling out a small, metallic silver flash drive, and laid it in Julian’s palm.

"What is this?" Julian asked, his brow furrowing.

"Two months ago, when Victoria started offering to make my tea every morning, I hired an independent cyber-security firm," Emily explained, her eyes flashing with the sharp intelligence that had made her a brilliant corporate analyst before her pregnancy. "I had them install a localized, encrypted pinhole camera hidden inside the eyes of the family portrait hanging directly opposite the staircase landing. It operates on an independent cellular network. It doesn't connect to the mansion's main hub."

Julian’s jaw dropped. He immediately stood up, plugging the flash drive into his laptop. Within seconds, a crystal-clear, high-definition video block rendered on the screen.

The footage showed Emily walking toward the stairs, holding her stomach. Suddenly, the door to Victoria’s private suite opened quietly. Victoria stepped out, her face twisted into an expression of raw, unadulterated hatred. She crept up behind Emily with terrifying speed, her hands extending forward, slamming directly into Emily’s back with enough force to kill. The video captured the exact moment Emily reached desperately for the banister, and it captured the look of intense disappointment on Victoria’s face when Emily managed to catch herself.

Julian gripped the edge of the desk so hard the wood groaned. The veins in his neck bulged with a terrifying, protective rage. "That's it. I’m calling the police. I’ll have her dragged out of this house in handcuffs tonight."

"No," Emily said, standing up slowly, her hand resting flat against her baby bump. "A police arrest right now will only cause a media scandal that Thomas can use to delay the will update next week. If Victoria goes to jail on a simple assault charge, her lawyers will have her out on bail in four hours. I don't want her in a bail hearing, Julian. I want her and Thomas completely erased from the Parker empire."

Julian looked at his wife, seeing the fierce, unbreakable spirit of a mother protecting her child. "What's the plan, Emily?"

"The annual Parker Global Shareholder Gala is this Friday," Emily said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy whisper. "Victoria thinks she’s going to celebrate her husband's promotion to Chief Operating Officer. We’re going to let her buy her expensive dress. We’re going to let her smile for the cameras. And then, we are going to show the entire world exactly what she did on that staircase."
