Chapter 1 - The Shadow on the Landing

The violent clack-clack-clack of Emily Parker's heels against the polished mahogany banister echoed like gunshots through the cavernous foyer of the Parker manor. Her knuckles turned a ghostly, bloodless white as she anchored her entire weight onto the railing, her breath tearing out of her throat in ragged, terrified gasps.
She was hyperventilating, her eyes wide as she looked down at the twenty steep marble steps below her. Her right foot was dangling off the edge of the landing.
One second. She had been exactly one second away from a catastrophic plunge that would have killed her unborn child.
"Oh, thank goodness! Emily, are you alright?!" a voice cried out from the top of the stairs.
Emily’s head snapped back up toward the shadows of the second-floor corridor. Standing under the dim amber glow of the crystal sconce was her sister-in-law, Victoria Parker. Victoria was clutching a silk robe to her chest, her face twisted into an expression of flawless, calculated panic.
But Emily had seen it. Before her body pitched forward, she had felt the distinct, aggressive pressure of a hand slamming violently into the center of her shoulder blades. She had heard the hurried friction of silk slippers retreating into the darkness.
"You pushed me," Emily whispered, her voice trembling but carrying a lethal clarity that seemed to freeze the humid air inside the mansion.
Victoria gasped, taking a theatrical step backward, her manicured hand flying to her mouth. "Emily! How can you say something so horrific? You’re eight months pregnant, you're exhausted, and the doctor said your blood pressure has been dangerously high. You clearly tripped on the hem of your maternity dress!"
"I didn't trip, Victoria," Emily said, slowly pulling her foot back onto the solid wood of the landing, her arm still wrapped tightly around her swollen stomach. "You were standing behind the marble pillar. I felt your rings dig into my back."
The heavy oak front doors of the mansion suddenly burst open, and Julian Parker, Emily’s husband and the heir to the Parker Global shipping empire, rushed into the foyer. He was still wearing his charcoal corporate suit, his tie loosened, his face covered in a cold sweat. He had driven ninety miles an hour from the downtown office the moment Emily's automated smart-watch sent an emergency elevated heart-rate alert to his phone.
"Emily!" Julian screamed, sprinting up the grand staircase three steps at a time. He threw his arms around her, checking her face, her hands, his eyes instantly tracking the way she was fiercely guarding her abdomen. "What happened? The app said your vitals spiked to critical levels! Did you fall?"
"She almost did, Julian," Victoria interrupted, rushing down the stairs to join them, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "Thank God she caught herself. I found her stumbling on the landing. I keep telling you, Julian, Emily isn't physically equipped to handle the stress of living in the main manor during her third trimester. She’s too fragile. Perhaps she should relocate to the quiet countryside cottage until the delivery."
Emily looked from Victoria’s smug, patronizing eyes to Julian’s stressed, exhausted face. She knew exactly what Victoria was doing. The Parker family patriarch, Julian’s grandfather, was updating his will next week to pass sixty percent of the family's voting shares directly to Julian’s firstborn child. If Emily lost the baby, the controlling interest of the multi-billion-dollar empire would default back to Victoria’s husband, Thomas.
Julian turned to Emily, his voice filled with protective desperation. "Emily, sweetheart, tell me. What happened up there?"

Emily looked back up at the dark corridor where she had almost lost everything. She felt the baby give a sudden, strong kick against her palm—a vibrant reminder of the life she had to protect. The vulnerability vanished from her eyes, replaced by a cold, calculating determination.
"Victoria is right, Julian," Emily said softly, a calm smile appearing on her lips that made Victoria’s eyes narrow in sudden suspicion. "I need to be very careful about who I allow behind me from now on. Because some people in this house are desperate to see me fall."
