Chapter 5 - The Fall of Vance Financial

The following morning, the grand auditorium at the Chicago Stock Exchange was packed to capacity. Hundreds of financial journalists, investors, and television crews filled the seats, their cameras pointed toward the main podium.
Richard Vance and Vanessa Vance sat near the front row, surrounded by their legal team. They looked tense, desperate, and visibly rattled by the arrest of George Miller late the previous night.
Daniel Sterling walked up to the podium, looking immaculate in a tailored dark suit. Beside him stood Emily, looking radiant, poised, and utterly transformed in an elegant navy dress, her head held high.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Daniel began, his voice echoing clearly through the loudspeakers. "Thank you for joining us today. Over the past seventy-two hours, severe allegations have circulated regarding the governance of Sterling Enterprises and our proposed merger with Vance Financial."
The room went dead silent. Cameras flashed continuously.
"Today, I am officially announcing the total cancellation of the Sterling-Vance merger," Daniel stated firmly.
A collective gasp swept through the auditorium. Richard Vance stood up from his seat, his face contorted with rage. "You can't do that, Sterling! Our contract is legally binding!"
"The contract contained an explicit moral turpitude clause, Mr. Vance," Daniel replied calmly, pulling a document from his folder. "A clause that was breached when your daughter, Vanessa Vance, physically assaulted an employee on my property, framed her for grand larceny, and attempted to hide an official codicil to the Sterling family estate."
Daniel stepped aside, gesturing toward Emily.
"Furthermore," Daniel continued, his voice filled with overwhelming pride, "it gives me immense joy to introduce the long-lost daughter of Arthur Sterling, and the rightful heir to thirty percent of Sterling Enterprises—my cousin, Emily Rose Sterling."
The auditorium erupted into chaotic applause and flashing lights. Reporters shouted questions frantically, leaning over the barriers to get a closer look at the young woman who had gone from a quiet housekeeper to one of the most powerful heiresses in the Midwest overnight.
Vanessa sat frozen in her seat, staring at Emily. The girl she had slapped, humiliated, and tried to destroy was now standing on the grandest stage in the city, surrounded by honor, wealth, and unconditional support.
Before Richard or Vanessa could exit the building through the side doors, four federal marshals stepped into the aisle, blocking their path.
"Richard Vance? Vanessa Vance?" the lead marshal announced, presenting a federal warrant. "You are both under arrest for corporate espionage, evidence tampering, and felony conspiracy to defraud an estate."

As the handcuffs clicked around Vanessa’s manicured wrists in front of dozens of rolling news cameras, she looked back one last time at Emily.
Emily didn't look at her with hatred or triumph. She looked at her with quiet, peaceful pity. The false accusations had been completely shattered, and the shadows of the past were finally gone.
