Chapter 4 - The Ghost of St. Jude

Back at the Sterling estate, the quiet atmosphere of the mansion had shifted entirely.

Emily was no longer dressed in her grey housekeeping uniform. Margaret had personally taken her to a boutique downtown, dressing her in a modest, beautiful cream-colored wool dress that complemented her soft features and dark hair. Yet, despite the luxury surrounding her, Emily felt entirely out of place.

She sat in the grand library, staring at a small gold-framed photograph Margaret had placed in her hands.

It was a picture of a handsome man with kind eyes and a woman with a gentle smile, holding a tiny baby wrapped in a pink blanket.

"That was your father, Arthur, and your mother, Clara," Margaret said softly, sitting beside Emily on the sofa and patting her hand. "Arthur was my youngest brother. When their car went off the bridge during that terrible blizzard, we were told the baby didn't survive the crash. We had no idea a passerby had taken you to St. Jude’s."

Emily wiped a tear from her eye, looking at the man in the photograph. "He... he looks so kind."

"He was," Margaret smiled warmly. "And he would be so proud to see the graceful, honest young woman you’ve grown into. You endured poverty, hard work, and cruel treatment, yet your heart remains pure. That is the true Sterling bloodline, my dear."

The library door opened, and Daniel stepped inside. He had removed his tie, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, looking exhausted but deeply relieved.

"The DNA laboratory just called with the expedited results," Daniel announced, a broad, genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. "It’s a ninety-nine point nine percent match. You are my cousin, Emily. You are officially family."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat. For the first time in her life, the heavy, crushing weight of loneliness seemed to lift from her shoulders. She stood up, and without thinking, threw her arms around Daniel’s neck.

Daniel held her tightly, patting her back with deep, protective affection. "No one will ever hurt you again, Emily. I promise you."

Before they could celebrate further, Daniel's personal assistant, Sarah, rushed into the library, her face pale.

"Mr. Sterling, there's a man at the front security gate," Sarah reported nervously. "He claims to be Emily’s former foster father, George Miller. He says he has critical legal documents regarding her childhood, and he’s demanding to see her immediately."

Emily froze in Daniel's arms, her face suddenly going pale. "George... no, please. He was awful to me. He used to take my earnings when I worked part-time jobs in high school."

Daniel’s expression instantly turned to cold steel. "Tell security to turn him away, Sarah."

"Wait, Daniel," Emily said, her voice shaking slightly as she pulled back. "He... he wouldn't come here unless someone paid him to. Vanessa must be behind this."

Daniel looked at his cousin, impressed by her sharp intuition. "You're right. Let him in, Sarah. But have two security guards stand right outside the door."

Five minutes later, George Miller walked into the library. He was a disheveled, greasy-haired man in his late fifties, wearing a worn jacket that smelled faintly of cheap stale tobacco. His eyes scanned the opulent library with greedy fascination before settling on Emily.

"Well, well, well," George sneered, stepping forward. "Look at you, little Emily. Dressed up like a princess while your old pop is drowning in debt."

"You were never my father, George," Emily said, her voice firmer than Daniel had ever heard it before. "What do you want?"

George pulled a thick brown envelope from his jacket and tossed it onto the coffee table. "Mr. Vance offered me half a million dollars to give him your original adoption records—records that prove I illegally signed away your custody when you were twelve. If I hand these over to the press, it'll drag the Sterling name through a five-year custody and estate lawsuit. You'll never see a dime of that thirty percent."

George leaned forward, a disgusting grin on his face. "Unless... you pay me a million dollars right now to hand them to you instead."

Daniel stepped forward, his tall frame looming over the smaller man. "Are you attempting to extort a member of the Sterling family in my own house, Mr. Miller?"

"Call it what you want, big shot!" George snapped. "I have the papers! Without me, her claims are tied up in court for years!"

Suddenly, the library doors slammed open again.

Two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department stepped into the room, followed by Daniel’s chief legal counsel.

"George Miller?" the lead officer asked, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "You're under arrest for felony extortion, conspiracy to commit fraud, and accepting bribes from Richard Vance."

George’s jaw dropped. "What?! You can't do this!"

"We recorded this entire conversation on our security feed, George," Daniel said coldly as the officers grabbed the struggling man’s arms. "And Mr. Vance’s bank transfers to your account were flagged by the federal authorities twenty minutes ago. Give my regards to Richard Vance when you see him in the holding cell."
