Chapter 3 - The Shadow Over the Boardroom

The news spread through the upper echelons of Chicago’s financial district like a toxic fog. By the following afternoon, headlines dominated the business journals:

Engagement Broken: Sterling Enterprises Heir Cancels Wedding to Vanessa Vance. Scandal in Lincoln Park: Framing Allegations Threaten Vance-Sterling Merger.

Inside the glass-walled executive boardroom on the 40th floor of Vance Financial, Richard Vance—Vanessa’s father—was pacing furiously. He was a ruthless, heavy-set man in a seven-thousand-dollar suit, his face flushed red with unbridled rage.

Vanessa sat across from him in a high-backed leather chair, her arms crossed, her eyes cold and defensive despite the swelling scandal.

"You fool!" Richard roared, slamming his fist onto the glass table, causing his coffee cup to rattle loudly. "You absolute idiot! I spent three years positioning you to marry Daniel Sterling so we could absorb their shipping infrastructure! And you blow it all because you couldn't keep your hands off a necklace?!"

"It wasn't about the necklace, Father!" Vanessa snapped back, her voice sharp with desperation. "Did you want me to sit back and let a street orphan take thirty percent of the company?!"

Richard stopped pacing, his dark eyebrows knitting together. "What are you talking about?"

Vanessa pulled her phone from her clutch and tossed it onto the table. "I found a file in Daniel's private study during the anniversary dinner last week. I hired an investigator to cross-reference the bloodlines from the St. Jude fire twenty years ago. The maid—that pathetic little girl cleaning the foyers—is Arthur Sterling’s biological daughter!"

Richard went completely silent. The color slowly drained from his face as he absorbed the magnitude of his daughter's revelation.

"If Daniel or Margaret run a DNA test on her," Vanessa continued, her eyes burning with bitter malice, "our proxy voting rights vanish. The merger dies. We lose everything we've spent a decade building. I had to get her arrested! I had to make sure she was convicted of a felony so she’d be legally disqualified from claiming the estate!"

"And you got caught on their overhead camera like an amateur!" Richard yelled, grabbing his daughter by the shoulders. "Now Daniel has called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning! He’s presenting the codicil, and he’s bringing the girl with him!"

Vanessa stood up, her jaw set into a vicious, unforgiving line. "Then we don't let her reach the boardroom, Father."

Richard looked at his daughter, horrified yet intrigued. "What are you saying?"

"Emily is fragile. She’s lived her whole life believing she’s nobody," Vanessa whispered, leaning across the table. "Her former foster father, George Miller, owes three hundred thousand dollars to loan sharks in South Chicago. I know where he is. If we bring George into the picture, we can make Emily sign a full waiver relinquishing her rights before the meeting even starts."

Richard’s lips curled into a slow, sinister smile. "Get George Miller on the phone. Now."
