Chapter 5 - The Trap at the Summit

While Ethan and Clara held each other in the storm in Maine, the executive boardroom in New York was locked in an emergency session.
Victor Sterling sat at the head of the table, flanked by four high-priced corporate attorneys. The board members sat in grim silence, preparing to sign over the controlling interest of Vance Global to the man who had terrorized the family for two decades.
"The math is simple, gentlemen," Victor smirked, tapping his gold pen against the contract. "Maya Vance holds fifty-one percent. Her legal power of attorney has been assigned to me. Ethan Vance has officially resigned and abandoned his post. You have no choice but to confirm me as CEO."
The double doors at the back of the boardroom swung open with thunderous force.
Evelyn Vance walked into the room.
She was no longer wearing her hospital gown. She wore a sharp, custom black velvet suit, her silvering hair pinned back with absolute precision. Though her face was pale from her recent heart attack, her eyes burned with a lethal, terrifying intensity.
Beside her walked two senior officers from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Victor’s smirk faltered slightly, though he quickly regained his composure. "Evelyn. Should you really be out of bed? You look like you're one step away from the grave. But it doesn't matter. The vote is done. You’ve lost."
Evelyn walked down the length of the table, her heels clicking like sharp gunshots against the floor. She didn't look broken anymore. She looked like a mother who had just found her reason to live.
"I lost my daughter twenty-three years ago because of your sickness, Victor," Evelyn said, her voice smooth and cold as diamond. "And three days ago, my own vanity almost destroyed her life again. But you made one crucial mistake."
Victor frowned, his eyes darting toward the two FBI officers. "What mistake?"
"You assumed Clara sold you her shares," Evelyn said quietly.
She reached into her coat and tossed a tablet onto the table. On the screen was a live video feed from the Rockport Police Department in Maine.
Sitting in the precinct office were Ethan and Clara, holding hands, surrounded by federal prosecutors.
Clara’s voice echoed through the boardroom speakers: "Mr. Sterling came to my cottage offering to help me destroy the Vance family. But I knew he was the man who stole me from my crib. I recorded every single conversation we had on my phone, including his confession that he bribed the hospital staff twenty-three years ago and forged my signature on the wire transfer documents yesterday."
Victor stood up violently, knocking his chair back. "That’s a lie! She signed it!"
"She signed a blank piece of paper provided by the FBI in a sting operation, Victor," the senior FBI agent announced, stepping forward with silver handcuffs. "Victor Sterling, you are under arrest for federal extortion, corporate fraud, and the interstate kidnapping of Maya Vance."
Victor looked around the room in absolute horror. The board members turned their backs on him. The lawyers he had hired immediately packed their bags and walked out the door.

As the officers slammed Victor against the glass wall and clicked the handcuffs around his wrists, Evelyn walked up to him.
"You took my child to ruin me," Evelyn whispered in his ear, her voice dripping with absolute satisfaction. "But her love for my son just saved us all."
