Chapter 2 - The Blood in the Velvet Safe

The ballroom erupted into chaotic, panicked murmurs. Reporters began snapping photos frantically, their flashes illuminating the absolute devastation etched into the faces of the three people standing on the stage.

"Security! Shut down the cameras! Clear the hall!" Ethan’s voice thundered, breaking his own paralysis as he stepped between his mother and Clara.

Within ninety seconds, the Vance security detail slammed the heavy oak doors shut, ejecting the gasping guests and shell-shocked socialites into the lobby. The vast ballroom became a echoing mausoleum, filled only with the scent of crushed white roses and the heavy, suffocating silence of a broken secret.

Evelyn remained on her knees, clutching the half-moon jade against her chest, weeping uncontrollably.

"My baby..." Evelyn choked out, her hands covered in makeup-stained tears as she looked up at Clara. "The dragon claw mark on the back... I carved that with my own ring the night you were born... Clara... my name for you was Maya..."

Clara backed away, her hands shaking as she gripped Ethan’s arm for support. "What are you talking about? Stop this! What kind of sick game are you playing now?!"

"It’s not a game, Clara," Ethan said softly, his voice dead and hollow. He didn't look at Clara. He couldn't. He kept his eyes fixed on the cold marble floor. "She’s telling the truth."

Clara looked at her groom, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Ethan? What do you mean?"

Ethan slowly reached into his inner tuxedo pocket and pulled out a key ring. His fingers were so numb he almost dropped them. "Twenty-three years ago, before I was adopted from the state home... Mrs. Vance lost her infant daughter, Maya. A man named Victor Sterling—her late husband’s business partner—kidnapped the baby to destroy the Vance family. The baby vanished. Mrs. Vance adopted me two years later from the same district to fill the void, to give the board an heir..."

Ethan finally turned his head to look at Clara. The pain in his eyes was so profound that Clara felt her breath catch.

"Mrs. Vance has the other half of that jade in her safe," Ethan whispered. "You aren't a nobody, Clara. You are Maya Vance. You are the true heiress to this house."

Clara shook her head rapidly, backing away until her heel struck the marble steps of the altar. "No... no! That’s impossible! I’ve lived in a two-room apartment! I worked three jobs to pay for my textile degree! This woman... this awful woman called me trash! She spent three years trying to buy you away from me!"

"Clara... Maya, please!" Evelyn sobbed, crawling forward on her knees across the torn silk of the wedding dress she had just destroyed. "Forgive me! I didn't know! God help me, I didn't know! I thought you were trying to take my son’s inheritance!"

"Don't touch me!" Clara screamed, her voice cracking with pure emotional anguish.

She looked down at Evelyn with absolute revulsion. "You didn't care who I was when you thought I was poor! You only care now because my blood matches your precious name! If I were just an ordinary girl, you would have destroyed my life today without a second thought!"

Clara ripped off her ruined veil, tossing it onto the floor. She looked at Ethan, her eyes filled with tears of betrayal. "And you... did you know? Did you know who I was?"

"No! Clara, I swear to you on my life, I had no idea!" Ethan stepped toward her, his hands outstretched in desperation. "I loved you for you! I didn't care about your family, your money, or your background! You were my light in this dark world!"

"Then why do you look at me like I’m a stranger now?!" Clara cried out.

Ethan stopped in his tracks. He closed his eyes, a single tear slipping down his pale cheek. "Because... because if you are her daughter... then I am the boy who took your place. I slept in your bedroom. I inherited your family’s wealth. I sat at your father’s desk... while you were eating soup in an orphanage."

The weight of the truth settled between them like an impenetrable wall of ice.

Before Ethan could say another word, Clara turned around, gathered the shreds of her torn dress in her hands, and ran out through the side exit of the ballroom into the pouring rain of the night.

"Clara! Wait!" Ethan yelled, sprinting after her.

"Ethan, stop!" Evelyn shouted from the floor, clutching her heart as a sudden, sharp pain flared in her chest. "Don't leave me! My heart... Ethan!"

Ethan halted at the doorway. He looked back at his adoptive mother collapsing onto the marble floor, then out at the dark rain where the woman he loved was disappearing into the night.
