Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Boardroom

Three days passed. The scandal was the only thing talked about across every major financial news channel and social media platform in the country.
The Vance Heir Swap. The Maid’s Dress and the Billion-Dollar Bloodline.
Evelyn Vance lay in a private VIP suite at St. Jude Memorial Hospital, hooked to heart monitors, her hair graying rapidly overnight. The arrogant titan of industry looked old, fragile, and utterly broken. But her physical pain was nothing compared to the news her legal team had just brought her.
Victor Sterling—the man who had kidnapped baby Maya twenty-three years ago—was still alive. And he had been watching the wedding scandal unfold from his penthouse in Dubai.
Inside the executive boardroom of Vance Global, Ethan sat alone at the massive mahogany table. The room was dark, lit only by the grey winter sky pressing against the glass windows. He hadn't slept in seventy-two hours. His tie was loose, his suit rumpled, his eyes bloodshot.
He had spent every hour searching for Clara. But she had vanished. She hadn't returned to her apartment, she hadn't called her textile gallery, and her phone was completely disconnected.
The heavy doors of the boardroom clicked open.
A tall man in a bespoke charcoal suit stepped into the room. He walked with a silver-topped cane, his grey hair slicked back, a sinister, knowing smile resting on his thin lips.
It was Victor Sterling.
"You look tired, young man," Victor said smoothly, his cane clicking against the hardwood floor as he walked toward the head of the table. "Though I suppose carrying a stolen empire on your shoulders would make any boy exhausted."
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into cold, lethal slits. He stood up slowly, his fists clenching at his sides. "Victor Sterling. You have a lot of nerve walking into this building after what you did to this family."
"What I did?" Victor chuckled, sliding gracefully into the executive leather chair that belonged to the CEO. "My boy, I didn't tear that wedding dress open three days ago. Evelyn did that all by herself. Her own arrogance brought down the house of cards."
"Get out of my chair," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous register.
"This isn't your chair, Ethan," Victor replied, tapping his cane against the floor. "You see, I’ve been tracking little Clara—or should I say Maya—for twenty-three years. I dropped her at that orphanage to destroy Evelyn’s sanity, and it worked. But now that the truth is out... Clara is the sole legal owner of fifty-one percent of Vance Global’s voting stock under her father’s original will."
Ethan froze.
Victor smiled wickedly, pulling a crisp white legal document from his leather briefcase. "Clara is young. She is traumatized, alone, and terrified of the Vance family. So when I reached out to her yesterday in her quiet little hideaway in Maine... offering her a way to strip Evelyn of everything and sell her shares to me... do you know what she said?"
Ethan sprinted across the room, grabbing Victor by his lapels, slamming the older man against the glass wall. "What did you do to her, Victor?! If you touched a single hair on her head, I will end you!"

"I didn't touch her!" Victor gasped, though his eyes remained filled with cruel triumph. "She signed the power of attorney over to me voluntarily, Ethan! She wants nothing to do with this blood money! She sold her entire birthright to me for ten million dollars... just to make sure you and Evelyn lose everything!"
Victor patted Ethan’s arm patronizingly. "By five o'clock today, the board will vote. I will be the new CEO. And you, my dear adopted fake prince... will be thrown out on the street where Evelyn found you."
