Chapter 5 - Shadows of the Past

With the Ashford scandal exploding across the national news, Arthur Ashford was formally indicted for fraud, and Brooke found herself blacklisted from every elite social club from New York to Palm Beach. But while Ethan’s business triumphed, a darker shadow from Grace’s past was about to cross their path.
A week after the dramatic board meeting, Ethan sat with Grace in his private study at the Greenwich estate. Lily was in the garden outside, happily chasing butterflies under the watchful eye of a newly hired, kind-hearted nanny.
"Grace," Ethan said, handing her a set of legal papers. "I want you to sign this."
Grace looked at the document, her eyes widening in disbelief. "A... an executive director position at the Cole Family Foundation? Salary... two hundred thousand dollars a year?"
"You have an extraordinary eye for community needs and real human connection," Ethan said earnestly. "You recognized the value of that Veterans Co-op when my high-priced consultants missed it. You saved my mother’s journal. You belong in a position where you can help people, Grace. Not scrubbing floors."
Grace put her hand over her mouth, tears welling in her eyes. "Ethan... I don't know what to say. Nobody has ever believed in me like this."
"You earned it," Ethan said gently.
Before Grace could sign, the heavy oak doors of the study burst open. Ethan’s chief of security, Marcus, rushed in, his face tense.
"Mr. Cole, we have a breach at the front gate," Marcus reported quickly. "A man forced his way past the security barrier. He’s demanding to see Grace."
Grace’s face went deadly pale. The pen slipped from her fingers, clattering against the glass desk. "No... no, please God, no..."
"Who is he, Grace?" Ethan asked, standing up immediately.
"It’s... it’s Marcus Vance," Grace whispered, her voice trembling violently with absolute terror. "My ex-husband. Lily’s father."
Grace had fled Marcus four years ago after enduring years of severe emotional and physical abuse. He was a dangerous, unstable man who had spent the last two years in prison for extortion.
Ethan’s eyes narrowed into slits of pure steel. "Marcus, call the police. Tell them a violent trespasser is on the property."
"He’s already near the terrace!" the head of security warned.
Ethan didn't wait. He stormed out of the study, with Grace trailing behind him in terror.
Outside on the marble terrace overlooking the gardens, a tall, unkempt man in a faded leather jacket was shouting aggressively at the nanny. He had pulled Lily by her small arm, clutching the terrified three-year-old against his side.
"Let go of me! Mommy!" Lily screamed, tears streaming down her small cheeks.
"Shut up, you little brat!" Marcus Vance yelled, shaking the child. "Where is your mother?! Grace! Get out here! I know you're sleeping with this billionaire! I want my cut!"
"Let go of my daughter!" Grace shrieked, running out onto the terrace.
Marcus Vance sneered, pulling a small pocket knife from his jacket and flicking it open, holding it near Lily. "Stay back, Grace! I saw the news! You’re famous now! Sitting in boardrooms with Ethan Cole! Well, I’m her father, and if you want her back unharmed, you tell your billionaire boyfriend to transfer five million dollars into my account right now!"
Grace fell to her knees, sobbing hysterically. "Please, Marcus! Take anything! Don't hurt Lily! Please!"
Ethan stepped past Grace, his posture calm, his eyes locked onto the man holding the child.
"You have three seconds to put that child down," Ethan said, his voice terrifyingly quiet.
"Or what, rich boy?" Marcus sneered, waving the knife. "You gonna hit me with your wallet? I have nothing to lose!"
"I don't need a wallet," Ethan said softly.
In one swift, decisive motion, Ethan leaped forward. Before Marcus Vance could react, Ethan grabbed the man’s wrist, applying a sharp tactical pressure point technique he had learned years ago from his private security training. Marcus let out a sharp cry of pain, his fingers involuntarily opening, dropping the knife onto the stone terrace.
With his other arm, Ethan scooped Lily up into his chest, twisting his body to shield her completely. Simultaneously, Ethan kicked Marcus hard in the knee, sending the abuser crashing down onto the stone floor.
Within seconds, three ColeTech security guards tackled Marcus Vance to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back just as the sirens of local police cars came wailing up the long driveway.
Lily buried her face in Ethan’s neck, sobbing loudly. "Mr. Cole! Mr. Cole!"

Ethan held the little girl tightly, patting her back with gentleness that contrasted sharply with the violence of the moment. "Shh... I’ve got you, little dragon. You're safe. Nobody is ever going to hurt you or your mother again. I promise."
Grace ran forward, throwing her arms around both Ethan and Lily, weeping tears of pure relief as the police dragged Marcus Vance away in handcuffs, ensuring he would spend the next decade behind bars for felony kidnapping and armed extortion.
