Chapter 4 - Ambush at Headquarters

The morning sun rose over the Manhattan skyline, painting the glass towers of ColeTech in brilliant gold. But inside the main board room on the 50th floor, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Arthur Ashford, a ruthless billionaire in a bespoke three-piece suit, sat at the head of the long mahogany table. Beside him sat Brooke, wearing dark sunglasses and a sharp black designer dress, posing as a devastated victim for the minor news cameras she had discreetly tipped off outside the building.
"He's running late," Arthur sneered, looking at his gold Rolex. "The coward knows he has no moves left. Without my factories in Taiwan, ColeTech is a hollow shell."
"He embarrassed me in front of the entire East Coast elite, Father," Brooke whimpered, though her eyes behind the tinted lenses were cold and calculating. "I want him ruined. I want that maid thrown in prison for trespassing, and I want Ethan out of his own company."
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Ethan Cole walked into the room. He didn't look like a man whose empire was on the verge of collapsing. He wore a simple navy suit, his posture straight, his expression calm and unbothered. Behind him walked Richard Sterling, looking nervous, and Grace Bennett, who looked utterly terrified in a modest navy blue dress Ethan had purchased for her that morning. Lily was sitting quietly in the executive waiting lounge under the care of Ethan’s trusted personal secretary.
"What is she doing here?" Brooke spat, pointing an accusatory finger at Grace. "You bring your trash into a board meeting now, Ethan? Have you completely lost your mind?"
"Control your daughter, Arthur," Ethan said smoothly, taking his seat at the opposite end of the long table. "Or I’ll have security remove her for breach of corporate protocol."
"You don't command anyone here anymore, Ethan!" Arthur thundered, slamming his fist onto the table. "The board is ready to vote. You humiliated my family last night based on the fake, fabricated story of a low-class cleaning woman! My factories produce seventy percent of your components. You sign over twenty percent of ColeTech to Brooke and issue a public apology by noon, or I cancel every contract and liquidate your stock!"
The other six board members exchanged nervous glances. One of them, a senior investor named Vance, cleared his throat. "Ethan... we appreciate your personal morals, but Arthur’s right. The market is reacting terribly. We can't afford to lose the Ashford supply chain. It’s economic suicide."
Ethan looked around the room at the men and women who had praised him for years, now trembling at the first threat from a bully. He picked up a slender leather folder he had brought with him and slid it across the table.
"Open it, Arthur," Ethan said quietly.
Arthur sneered, casually flicking open the folder. But as his eyes scanned the top document, the color drained completely from his face.
"What... what is this?" Arthur stammered, his fingers tightening on the paper.
"That," Ethan said, leaning back in his chair, "is a complete forensic audit of Ashford Manufacturing, conducted quietly over the last six months by my private intelligence team."
Brooke sat up straight, her confidence suddenly faltering. "Father? What is he talking about?"
"For three years, Arthur, you’ve been siphoning ColeTech’s intellectual property to set up unauthorized secondary factories in Vietnam," Ethan stated, his voice ringing through the silent room like a courtroom judge. "You’ve been skimming six percent off our microchip orders and funneling it into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands. I was going to give you a quiet way out next year during our contract renewal. But since you brought your daughter into my home to crush a child’s heart and threaten my life’s work... I decided to send those files to the Department of Justice thirty minutes ago."
"You... you wouldn't!" Arthur gasped, standing up so fast his chair fell backward. "That will destroy my family!"
"You destroyed yourself through greed," Ethan replied coldly. "And as for the supply chain—Grace, if you please?"
Grace stepped forward, her hands shaking slightly, but her voice clear. She placed a stack of blue folders in front of each board member.
"Two weeks ago, while volunteering at St. Mary's," Grace explained softly, looking the board members in the eye, "I met with the directors of the Connecticut Veterans Manufacturing Cooperative. They are a network of local, veteran-owned high-tech factories looking for ethical corporate partnerships. Mr. Cole reviewed their capabilities three days ago."
Ethan smiled at Grace, then looked back at the board. "The Veterans Co-op can produce our microchips at twenty percent lower cost, created right here in America, supporting local families instead of offshore crooks. The contracts were signed at seven o'clock this morning."
The board members gasped, quickly flipping through the documents.
"The supply chain is secured," Ethan announced. "The Ashfords are finished. And as CEO, I am officially filing for a restraining order against Brooke Ashford on behalf of Grace and Lily Bennett."

Brooke let out a furious, animalistic screech, lunging across the table toward Grace. "You stupid little maid! You ruined my life!"
Before she could reach Grace, two heavy security guards grabbed Brooke by the arms, dragging her screaming and kicking out of the boardroom, while Arthur slumped into his chair, pale and broken, waiting for the federal marshals to arrive.
