Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

The party ended not with a toast, but with a silent, hurried mass exodus. Within thirty minutes, every guest had departed, eager to spread the scandal across the elite social circles of Connecticut and Manhattan.
Brooke Ashford had left screaming, her high heels clicking loudly against the driveway as security personal escorted her and her luggage off the Cole estate. But as she was forced into her sports car, her tear-streaked face hardened into a mask of pure, bitter hatred.
"You think you can ruin me, Ethan?" she snarled into her phone as she sped down the dark highway toward Greenwich. "You chose a maid and a bastard brat over me? I will destroy you. I will take everything you own."
Back inside the mansion, the quiet was overwhelming.
Ethan sat at the massive oak table in his private study. On the table sat the ruined journal, its spine cracked, alongside the handwritten letter from his mother. Beside him sat Grace and Lily. Ethan had ordered his personal chef to make Lily a fresh plate of warm chocolate chip cookies and hot milk. The little girl was currently sitting on a velvet sofa, blissfully oblivious to the adult storm brewing around her, happily munching on a cookie while swinging her scuffed shoes.
"Mr. Cole, you don't have to keep us here," Grace said softly, holding a cup of tea she felt far too guilty to drink. "I can pack my things and leave tonight. I know this has caused an awful mess for your company."
Ethan looked up, his dark eyes filled with genuine regret. "Grace, you saved my mother’s legacy. If you hadn't carried that box into this house, I would have gone through with marrying a woman who would have hollowed out my life. You and Lily aren't leaving. In fact, if you'll let me, I want to make sure neither of you ever has to fear for your future again."
Grace shook her head, tears threatening to spill again. "I didn't do it for a reward, Mr. Cole. I did it because... because a mother’s love shouldn't be lost in an archive closet."
Ethan smiled warmly, reaching over to pat Grace’s hand. "I know. And that’s exactly why you deserve better than cleaning floors for people who don't appreciate you."
However, the peace in the room was shattered when Ethan’s phone began to vibrate incessantly on the table. It was Richard Sterling, the chief legal counsel for ColeTech and Ethan’s long-time business advisor.
Ethan picked up the phone and pressed speaker. "Richard, I assume you've heard."
"Ethan, it’s a absolute bloodbath!" Richard’s panicked voice echoed into the quiet study. "Brooke didn't just leave quietly. Her father, Arthur Ashford, owns forty percent of our primary supply chain in Asia! He just called an emergency meeting of the board. Brooke is claiming you assault her emotionally, broke off the engagement publicly to sabotage her family’s reputation, and that you are mentally unfit to lead ColeTech!"
Ethan’s brow furrowed. "Arthur Ashford is using his supply chain leverage to threaten the company?"
"He’s doing more than threatening!" Richard warned. "He’s threatening to pull all manufacturing contracts by tomorrow morning unless you step down as CEO or make a public apology, reinstate the engagement, and hand over twenty percent of ColeTech’s voting shares to Brooke as 'reparation.' The board is in a full panic, Ethan. Stock futures are down eight percent in after-hours trading!"
Ethan looked over at the ruined journal on the table. He picked up his mother’s letter, his thumb gently tracing the blue ink.
Never let the noise of wealth drown out the quiet truth...
"Let them panic," Ethan said softly.
"Ethan, are you insane?!" Richard yelled. "If Ashford pulls the supply chain, our new medical tech line fails before it even launches! You lose billions!"
"Tell Arthur Ashford and his daughter that I will not apologize," Ethan said, his voice turning into cold steel. "Call an emergency shareholder meeting for tomorrow afternoon at ten o'clock at corporate headquarters. If the Ashfords want a war, Richard... give them one."
Ethan hung up the phone. He looked at Grace, who was staring at him with wide, worried eyes.

"Is... is your company in danger because of what happened tonight?" Grace asked, her voice trembling.
"My company was in danger the moment I let corrupt people into my life," Ethan replied, offering a comforting smile to the terrified mother. "Don't worry, Grace. Tomorrow, we clean house."
