Chapter 8 - Broken Bonds

The aftermath of the harbor raid unfolded like a massive, high-stakes news broadcast. Over the next forty-eight hours, federal agents dismantled Pendelton’s international syndicate, arresting dozens of high-ranking corporate executives linked to illegal genetic research and money laundering.

I sat in a private room at the central police precinct, wrapped in a warm blanket, a steaming cup of tea resting in my hands. Beside me sat Julianna, her statement to the FBI finally complete after hours of interrogation. Because she had worked alongside federal authorities to bring down the syndicate, she was granted full immunity and protection under the witness protection protocol.

The door to the room opened, and Detective Ramirez stepped in, looking exhausted but satisfied.

"Your son, Leo, is back at your home with your aunt," Ramirez told me softly. "He's safe, Maya. He has no idea what happened."

I closed my eyes and let out a long, shuddering breath. "Thank you, Detective."

"There is someone outside who wants to speak with you," Ramirez added, glancing toward the hallway. "Your brother."

My expression hardened instantly. "Send him in."

Ryan walked into the room slowly, his shoulders slouched, his eyes red-rimmed and swollen from hours of crying. He looked completely defeated, a shell of the brother I had grown up with. Melissa was nowhere to be seen.

"Maya..." Ryan whispered, stopping several feet away from the table. He didn't dare look Julianna in the eye. "I... I don't know what to say."

"Then don't say anything," I replied coldly, setting my teacup down with a sharp clatter.

"Melissa left me," Ryan confessed, his voice breaking into pitiful sobs. "She packed her bags this morning. She said she couldn't look at me after I left you and the baby in that hospital. She said I was a coward."

"She was right," Julianna said sharply, her tone cutting through the room like a razor blade. "You abandoned your own sister after she nearly died carrying a child for you. You tried to hand an innocent baby over to a syndicate because you were terrified of your own shadow."

"I was scared!" Ryan yelled defensively, tears streaming down his face. "I thought they were going to kill us! I didn't know Mom and Dad were murdered! I didn't know any of this!"

"Fear is an explanation, Ryan, not an excuse," I said, standing up to face my twin brother. "I carried that baby for nine months. I went through hours of labor. And the second things got difficult, you disowned her. You looked at a newborn child—your own blood—and said 'I can't take her home.'"

Ryan hung his head, sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm sorry, Maya. Please... let me make it right. Where is the baby? Where is my daughter?"

"She isn't your daughter anymore, Ryan," I said firmly, my voice unwavering. "You relinquished your parental rights the moment you walked out of that hospital room and left her to die."

Ryan gasped, looking up in shock. "What? Maya, no! You can't do that!"

"I already spoke to the family lawyer," I continued coldly. "Because I am her biological surrogate and carrying mother under the state law, and because you signed the initial abandonment refusal form at the hospital in front of witnesses, your parental rights are nullified. Julianna and I are filing for full legal custody."

"You're taking my daughter from me?!" Ryan cried out.

May you like

"You gave her away, Ryan," I said, stepping closer to him, looking into the face of my twin brother and feeling nothing but deep, sorrowful pity. "You don't deserve to be a father. Not until you learn what it truly means to protect a family."

I turned my back on him. Ryan stood there for a long moment, weeping silently, before slowly turning and walking out of the room, closing the door behind him.
