Chapter 6 - The Harbor Trap

The rain had turned into a thick, low-lying fog as my SUV rolled silently into the abandoned industrial district near the city’s North Harbor. Looming shadows of rusted cranes and decaying shipping containers stood like giant iron monsters in the mist.
Julianna sat hidden in the deeply tinted back seat, crouched on the floorboards with her weapon drawn, while I sat behind the wheel. The newborn baby was strapped securely into her car seat beside Julianna, fast asleep, oblivious to the storm raging around her.
My satellite earpiece crackled to life. It was Marcus, the leader of Julianna’s security team, stationed on a roof three hundred yards away.
"Maya, we have eyes on the warehouse," Marcus whispered through the earpiece. "Pendelton has six armed men outside and at least four inside. Your brother Ryan and his wife are tied to chairs in the center of the main floor. They look shaken up, but they are alive."
"What about my son?" I whispered back, my knuckles white as I gripped the steering wheel. "Is Leo safe?"
"My team intercepted Pendelton’s men outside your house twenty minutes ago," Marcus confirmed. "Your son and his babysitter are safe in a secure safehouse. Pendelton doesn't know he's lost his leverage on Leo yet. You hold the upper hand, but you have to act fast."
A wave of immense relief washed over me. Leo was safe. My boy was safe. Now, I only had to save my foolish twin brother and the innocent baby girl beside me.
I looked back at Julianna. "Are you sure this scanner trick will work?"
Julianna held up a small, modified optical reader connected to a laptop. "Mom built a secondary code sequence into the tissue sample. When Pendelton’s medical team scans the birthmark on the baby’s back, it won't give them access to his money. It will trigger an immediate, irreversible override command to his server bank, wiping his accounts and broadcasting his location to the FBI."
"And what happens when he realizes he's been wiped?" I asked.
"That's when we tear his world down," Julianna replied with a cold, ruthless smile. "Get in there, Maya. Play the terrified mother. I’ll be right behind you."
I took a deep breath, stepped out of the vehicle into the freezing rain, and unclipped the baby seat. Holding the infant carrier tightly in my arms, I walked toward the towering metal doors of Warehouse 4.
The heavy steel door creaked open as I approached. Two armed guards shoved me inside, instantly searching me for weapons before escorting me down a long, dimly lit corridor into the vast open warehouse.
In the center of the room, illuminated by a single overhead floodlight, were Ryan and Melissa, bound to metal chairs. Melissa’s face was swollen from crying, while Ryan looked completely broken, his head hanging low.
"Maya!" Ryan cried out, lifting his head as he saw me. "You brought her! Thank God! Please, give her to them! Tell them to let us go!"
"Shut up, Ryan," I snapped, my voice ringing clear and authoritative through the massive space.
Arthur Pendelton stepped out from the shadows, dressed impeccably despite the grime of the warehouse. A smug, victorious smile stretched across his face.
"Ah, Maya. The devoted surrogate," Pendelton sneered, stepping toward me. "I must admit, your sudden burst of maternal heroism at the hospital was impressive. But ultimately, foolish. You cannot outrun reality."
"I don't care about your reality, Pendelton," I said, stopping ten feet away from him. "I have the baby. My son is safe out of your reach, and I know who you are. Let Ryan and Melissa go, and I hand over the child."
Pendelton laughed softly, a dry, hollow sound. "You don't make demands here, my dear. Guards, take the baby."
Two men stepped forward, but before they could lay a finger on the carrier, I reached into my coat and pulled out a flare gun, aiming it directly at a pile of open chemical drums nearby.
"Step back!" I screamed. "One spark and this entire warehouse goes up! You want the code in her DNA? You get it on my terms! Release my brother and his wife right now!"
Pendelton’s eyes narrowed, his smile instantly vanishing. He signaled his men to hold their ground. "Unbind them," he ordered coldly.

A guard slashed the ropes holding Ryan and Melissa. Melissa immediately scrambled to her feet and ran toward the exit without looking back. Ryan hesitated, looking at me with a mixture of profound shame and fear, before running after his wife.
"They're clear," Pendelton said softly, taking a step toward me. "Now, set the child down and let my doctor scan the mark."
