Chapter 2 - The Contract of Silence

The room plunged into an immediate, suffocating panic. Melissa let out a blood-curdling scream and ducked behind Ryan, while Ryan threw his arms out, trying to position himself between the armed men and the hospital bed where I lay holding the newborn.
"Who the hell are you?" Ryan demanded, his voice trembling despite his attempt to sound firm. "Security! Someone call security!"
The man in the suit smiled coldly, pulling a small silver device from his breast pocket and pressing a button. A low electronic hum echoed through the room, cutting off the landline phone on the bedside table and jamming our mobile signals.
"There will be no security, Mr. Vance," the man said smoothly. "My name is Arthur Pendelton. I represent the Vance Family Trust—or what remains of it after your late parents tried to embezzle forty million dollars from our investments."
"Our parents were schoolteachers!" I spat, pulling the baby closer to my chest, covering her shoulder with the yellow hospital blanket. "They didn't have forty million dollars!"
"They lived modest lives as a cover, my dear Maya," Pendelton replied, taking a step closer. His eyes locked onto the baby in my arms. "Your parents were the primary trustees for an international private equity firm. When they realized the origins of our capital, they attempted to run. They took our money, hid their eldest daughter Julianna away to safeguard their secrets, and staged their own deaths in that convenient car crash twelve years ago."
My heart stopped. "Staged? Our parents are dead! We identified their bodies!"
"You identified closed caskets based on dental records that had been altered by a bought-and-paid-for coroner," Pendelton corrected coldly. "Your parents are very much alive, living comfortably under assumed names in South America. But Julianna... poor Julianna remained behind to manage their legacy. She made a contract with us: her child’s eventual trust fund in exchange for the return of our assets. And now, thanks to your brother's desperate search for a surrogate egg donor, Julianna’s biological child is finally in this room."
"No," Melissa sobbed, clutching Ryan’s arm. "No, this is insane! This is a hospital! You can't just take a baby!"
"I am not here to steal a child, Mrs. Vance," Pendelton said softly, though his tone was laced with poison. "I am here to collect a debt. That child carries the biological key to a encrypted cold-storage wallet containing thirty million dollars in bearer bonds—a key that Julianna genetically mapped into a synthesized DNA strand before she disappeared. We funded the very fertility clinic your husband visited."
I felt the room spinning. The baby in my arms began to cry, her tiny fists waving in the air. The realization hit me like a physical blow: Ryan hadn't just sought out a surrogate arrangement; he had walked straight into a trap laid years ago by our parents and our forgotten sister.
"She’s an innocent baby!" I roared, tears of anger spilling down my cheeks. "She isn't a vault! She isn't a key! She’s my niece!"
"She is an asset," Pendelton countered, gesturing to his men. "Hand her over quietly, and the three of you walk out of this hospital alive. Resist, and I will ensure your other child—your eight-year-old son, Leo, who is currently at home with his babysitter—suffers the consequences of your family's poor financial decisions."
My blood ran completely cold. Leo. They knew about my son. They were watching my house.
"Don't touch him!" I screamed, every instinct as a mother overriding the excruciating pain in my body. "Don't you dare touch my son!"
"Then give me the girl," Pendelton commanded, holding out his gloved hands.
Ryan looked at me, his eyes full of pure terror and cowardice. "Maya... give her to him. Please. We have to save Leo. We can't fight these people!"
"Are you insane, Ryan?!" I yelled, staring at my twin brother in absolute disbelief. "This is your daughter! You want me to give her to criminals?!"
"She isn't my daughter!" Ryan cried out, collapsing to his knees in tears. "She’s a monster’s child! She’s Julianna’s! I was tricked!"
"She is an innocent life!" I snapped. I looked down at the tiny baby girl crying in my arms. She had done nothing wrong. She hadn't asked to be born into this web of greed and crime.
Looking Pendelton dead in the eyes, I tightened my grip on the baby, pulled the emergency panic chord hidden behind the headboard with my thumb, and screamed at the top of my lungs: "FIRE! THERE'S A FIRE IN ROOM 402!"
The loud, piercing screech of the hospital fire alarm shattered the room's tension instantly. Overhead sprinklers burst to life, drenching everyone in freezing cold water. Pendelton cursed, his men momentarily blinded and distracted by the sudden chaos and water deluge.

"Grab her!" Pendelton yelled, but I didn't wait.
Using every ounce of adrenaline left in my body, I swung my legs off the bed, wrapped the baby tightly inside my dry jacket, and bolted through the side door leading into the service stairwell.
