Chapter 2 - The Serpent's Strike

The lobby of Blackwood Capital Partners in downtown Chicago was a monument to modern wealth—soaring glass walls, black marble floors, and security guards in tailored suits. But on this brisk December afternoon, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
When Richard walked through the glass doors at precisely one o'clock, holding Ethan’s small hand, the whispers began instantly.
Reporters from local financial tabloids were gathered outside the perimeter, cameras flashing through the glass. Cassandra’s smear campaign had moved with terrifying speed. She had painted herself as a devoted partner who had been suddenly cast aside by an unhinged, cold-hearted billionaire who neglected his personal life to the point of madness.
Inside the executive boardroom, six high-ranking board members sat alongside the representatives from Apex Global. At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance, looking pale and furious.
"Richard," Marcus snapped, standing up as Richard guided Ethan to a comfortable leather chair in the corner of the room, handing him a tablet and a sketchbook. "You brought a child to a board meeting? Is this a joke to you?"
"My son stays with me," Richard said, his voice ringing with absolute authority that silenced the room. He took his seat at the head of the mahogany table, adjusting his cufflinks. "Now, gentlemen, let’s discuss Apex."
Arthur Pendelton, the sixty-year-old chairman of Apex Global, leaned forward, crossing his arms. "Richard, we came here to finalize a historic partnership. But over the last six hours, your personal life has leaked into every major financial column in the Midwest. Miss Vale claims you are emotionally volatile, that your home life is in chaos, and that you are unfit to manage a fund of this magnitude."
Before Richard could answer, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Cassandra Vale glided into the room. She was dressed in a tailored cream suit, her hair styled to perfection, tears artfully drying on her cheeks. Behind her walked her attorney, Harold Finch—a notorious high-society lawyer known for messy, high-profile divorces and corporate shakedowns.
"I’m sorry to interrupt, gentlemen," Cassandra said, her voice trembling with calculated tragedy. "But as a member of the Blackwood Charitable Foundation board and Richard’s life partner, I have a duty to protect the integrity of this institution."
"You are no longer a member of the foundation, Cassandra," Richard said, his tone icy and measured. "And you were never my life partner. You were a mistake I am currently rectifying."
"Is that what you call it, Richard?" Finch, her lawyer, stepped forward, tossing a thick blue folder onto the center of the table. "Gentlemen of the board, my client has filed a civil suit against Mr. Blackwood for breach of verbal contract, emotional distress, and defamation. Furthermore, we are filing a formal petition with Child Protective Services regarding the environment in the Blackwood residence."
Ethan flinched in his corner, pressing his back against the chair. Richard saw the boy's reaction, and something primal flared deep within his chest.
Richard slowly stood up. Standing at six-foot-two, with years of commanding boardrooms behind him, his presence dominated the vast room.
"You brought CPS into this?" Richard asked softly. The quietness of his voice was far more dangerous than a roar.
"You left your child neglected, Richard!" Cassandra cried out, playing to the room. "I spent four years trying to keep that boy disciplined while you worked eighty hours a week! You don't know how to raise a child! The court will see that you are an unfit father!"
"Is that so?" Richard walked around the table, stopping right in front of Cassandra. "You claim you were disciplined. Is starving an eight-year-old child considered discipline in your world, Cassandra?"
The room went dead quiet. Arthur Pendelton frowned, looking between Richard and Cassandra. "Starving?"
"Last night, I came home early," Richard said, turning to face the entire board. "I found my son kneeling beside the kitchen trash can, eating stale bread covered in coffee grounds. Why? Because Cassandra told him that eating too much would make him 'fat and sloppy' and embarrass me."
Gasps echoed across the table. One of the female board members pressed her hand to her mouth in disgust.
Cassandra’s face flushed red, her composure faltering for a fraction of a second. "He’s lying! The boy is disturbed! He makes up stories for attention!"
"Does he?" Richard reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a sleek USB drive. He tossed it onto the table in front of Arthur Pendelton. "That drive contains six months of security footage from inside my home. I had the system upgraded in June. It records audio and video in the kitchen and hallways."
Cassandra’s eyes widened with absolute, naked panic. She hadn't known about the audio upgrade.
"On that drive," Richard continued, his voice steady as iron, "you will hear Miss Vale threatening to lock Ethan in the basement if he asked for an afternoon snack. You will hear her telling him that his father didn't love him because he was too needy. And you will see her physically slapping a plate of food out of his hands."
Cassandra backed away a step, her hands trembling. "Richard... you... you can't show that..."
"I already sent the raw footage to the Chicago Police Department and the Department of Family Services this morning," Richard said. "You aren't just leaving my house, Cassandra. You are going to face criminal charges for child abuse and endangerment."
Finch, her lawyer, immediately closed his briefcase, looking at Cassandra with profound embarrassment. "Miss Vale, we are leaving. Right now."
May you like
"No! Finch, do something!" Cassandra screamed as her lawyer grabbed her arm and dragged her toward the exit. "Richard, you can't do this to me! I made you! I made this family look respectable!"
"My family didn't need respectability," Richard shouted after her as security guards escorted her out the door. "It needed a father!"
