Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

The 50th floor of the Blackwood Capital building overlooked the skyline of Chicago, but the atmosphere inside the executive boardroom was cold enough to freeze glass.
At 8:55 AM, twelve board members, representing billions of dollars in institutional capital, sat around the long oak conference table. At the head of the table sat Julian Vance, wearing a victorious, smirking expression. Beside him sat a high-powered crisis PR attorney representing "Cassandra Vale."
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian began, standing up and clearing his throat. "We are here to address an unprecedented crisis of leadership. Richard Blackwood’s personal scandals, erratic behavior, and sudden neglect of the $2 billion Apex merger have placed this entire institution at risk. The press is outside this very building. We must vote today to remove him to protect our shareholders."
"Is that so, Julian?"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
Richard Blackwood walked in, flanked not by corporate lawyers, but by Marcus Cole and two uniformed officers from the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes Division.
The room fell dead silent. Julian’s smug smile faltered.
"Richard, what is the meaning of this circus?" Julian snapped, trying to maintain composure. "You can't bring police officers into an executive session!"
"I can when a felony crime has been committed on these premises," Richard said calmly, walking to the foot of the table and placing a thick leather binder on the wood.
"What are you talking about?" one of the major board members asked, leaning forward.
"Four years ago," Richard explained, his voice commanding absolute authority, "my late wife passed away. I was grieving, vulnerable, and focused on building this company. That was when Julian Vance introduced me to a woman named Cassandra Vale."
Richard opened the binder, displaying documents on the large digital screen at the front of the room.
"Through private forensic investigators, we have discovered that 'Cassandra Vale' is actually Sheila Dawkins, a convicted fraudster. But more importantly, we uncovered bank records showing that over the last four years, Julian Vance transferred over $3 million from an off-shore shell company directly to Sheila Dawkins."
Gasps echoed across the room. Board members turned to glare at Julian, whose face had turned a sickly shade of white.
"Julian paid her to enter my home," Richard continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous register. "Her job was simple: keep me isolated, sabotage my personal life, and create enough psychological stress and home turmoil that I would eventually step down, leaving Julian to take over Blackwood Capital. And for four years, she systematically abused and starved my eight-year-old son to keep him quiet and broken!"
"That’s a lie! It’s libel!" Julian screamed, slamming his hands on the table, sweat pouring down his forehead. "You have no proof!"
"We have the wire transfer logs, Julian," Officer Davis stepped forward, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "And Ms. Dawkins was arrested an hour ago at O'Hare Airport trying to board a flight to Dubai. She’s already signing a full confession implicating you in extortion, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit child endangerment."
The board members looked at Julian in utter disgust and horror. The man who had tried to portray Richard as unfit was exposed as a ruthless monster who used an innocent child as collateral damage for corporate greed.
"Julian Vance," Officer Davis said, clicking the handcuffs onto Julian’s wrists. "You have the right to remain silent..."
As Julian was dragged out of the boardroom in shame past news cameras waiting in the lobby, the senior board member stood up and walked over to Richard, holding out his hand.
"Richard... we are deeply, deeply sorry," the board member said, his voice trembling with genuine remorse. "We had no idea what you and your boy were enduring. Take all the time you need. The company is yours."

Richard looked at the board members, then down at his watch. It was 10:30 AM.
"Thank you," Richard said, sliding his leather binder closed. "I am resigning as active CEO today. I am appointing an interim management team. My full-time job from now on is being Ethan’s father."
