Chapter 3 - The Trap in the Media

Richard stared at the message, his jaw clenching. He immediately forwarded the screenshot to his personal attorney, Arthur Pendelton, and his head of security, Marcus Cole.
"She’s bluffing about CPS," Arthur advised over a secure line. "You are a wealthy, devoted father with no criminal record. But the media fallout? That’s where she can hurt you. If she goes to the press with a twisted narrative that you abandoned your child while living in luxury, the public relations nightmare could sink Blackwood Capital's public offering."
"I don't care about the stock price, Arthur," Richard said firmly. "I care about protecting my son from being dragged through the dirt."
"Then we need to strike first," Marcus Cole chimed in. "I’ve started digging into Cassandra Vale’s background before she met you. Richard, she isn't who she claimed to be. 'Cassandra Vale' is an alias. Her real name is Sheila Dawkins, and she has a history of high-end social climbing, extortion, and fraudulent credit schemes in Miami and New York."
Richard’s eyes widened. "She was a fraud from the start."
"A professional one," Marcus confirmed. "And I suspect she isn't working alone. Someone inside your firm gave her access to your personal schedule and financial details four years ago."
Richard’s mind raced back to Julian Vance's aggressive stance earlier that morning. Julian had been the one who introduced Cassandra to Richard at a charity gala four years ago, shortly after Richard's first wife had passed away. Was Julian in on the scheme to slowly destabilize Richard and take control of the company?
Despite the gathering storm, Richard kept his promise to Ethan.
At 6:00 PM sharp, Richard walked into the bustling gymnasium of St. Jude’s Academy. Among the crowd of parents in casual attire, Richard stood out in his tailor-made suit, but his eyes were fixed solely on table 14, where Ethan stood nervously beside a cardboard volcano display.
When Ethan saw his father walk through the gymnasium doors, his face lit up with radiant joy. He waved frantically. "Dad! Over here!"
Richard walked over, kneeling beside the small table. "Show me how it works, scientist."
For the next two hours, Richard gave Ethan his undivided attention. He didn't check his phone once, even as it vibrated continuously in his pocket with panicked calls from board members regarding the postponed Apex deal. For those two hours, Richard wasn't the feared titan of Wall Street; he was just Ethan’s proud father.
However, as they left the school parking lot, a fleet of news vans and paparazzi suddenly swarmed Richard’s SUV, flashbulbs exploding against the windshield.
A reporter thrust a microphone toward Richard’s rolled-down window as security guards tried to clear a path.
"Mr. Blackwood! Is it true your former fiancée has filed charges accusing you of child neglect and emotional instability?" the reporter shouted. "Is Blackwood Capital removing you as CEO tomorrow morning?!"
Inside the car, Ethan shrank back into his seat, covering his ears as memories of media chaos resurfaced.
Richard reached back, grabbing Ethan’s hand firmly. "Look at me, Ethan. Cover your eyes. I’ve got this."
Richard rolled down his window just an inch, looking straight into the camera lenses with terrifying intensity.
"My son is loved, safe, and happy," Richard said, his voice echoing over the chaotic crowd. "Anyone attempting to use my child as a pawn in a corporate game will face the full weight of my legal and financial power. No comment further."

As they drove away into the night, Richard’s phone chimed with a high-priority alert. It was an emergency summons from the Board of Directors of Blackwood Capital Partners.
An emergency vote had been scheduled for 9:00 AM the following morning to strip Richard of his CEO title and appoint Julian Vance as interim Chairman.
