Chapter 3 - The Traitor in the Shadows

The news of the incident at the Vance villa didn't leak to the public immediately. Marcus had placed a strict media blackout on the event, but in the high-stakes world of global logistics, silence was often louder than noise. By the next morning, the board of directors was in a state of absolute panic.
Marcus sat at the head of the glass conference table at the corporate headquarters, twenty floors above the city. The board members were dialed in via secure video link from London, Tokyo, and New York.
"We are seeing unusual short-selling on our stocks," announced Julian, the Chief Financial Officer and a long-time associate of Victoriaâs late husband. He looked nervous, his fingers tapping a frantic rhythm against his gold pen. "Someone is trying to trigger a panic sell-off. If the public finds out that Victoria Hastings has been removed from the management team, it could signal instability."
Marcus leaned back, his eyes narrowing as he watched Julianâs body language through the high-definition screens. "The only way the market would know about Victoriaâs removal is if someone inside this room leaked it."
Julian choked slightly on his water. "Marcus, be reasonable. We are just looking at the data. Victoria had a strong relationship with our European partners. Her sudden absence creates a vacuum."
"There is no vacuum," Mayaâs voice cut through the audio system. She walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored black maternity suit, looking every bit the corporate sovereign she was born to be. She took a seat directly to Marcus's right. "Because as of 9:00 AM today, the Leighton Trust has assumed direct control of fifty-one percent of the voting shares. The vacuum has been filled by the original owners."
The board members went completely silent. Julianâs pen slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the glass table.
"Mrs. Vance... Maya," Julian stammered, his face turning an unhealthily pale shade of gray. "We didn't know the Leighton Trust was still active. The documents were classified as dormant for thirty years."
"They were dormant because I chose not to use them," Maya said, looking directly at Julian through the camera lens. "But when someone tries to drown me and my unborn child in front of fifty guests, I tend to wake up my assets. And speaking of assets, Julian, why did you transfer forty million dollars from the corporate reserve account to a private bank in Switzerland at 2:00 AM last night?"
A collective gasp echoed through the digital conference call.
Marcus stood up, his towering frame casting a long shadow across the boardroom table. "You thought you were slick, Julian. You were Victoriaâs inside man. Youâve been helping her siphon money from the logistics budget to fund her private investments for the last three years. And last night, when you realized she had failed to eliminate Maya, you tried to clear out the vault and run."
"This is a defamation!" Julian shouted, standing up from his chair in his London office. "I have served this company for twenty years! You can't accuse me of this without proof!"
"We don't accuse without proof, Julian," Ethanâs voice came from the back of the room as he entered, accompanied by two agents from the Federal Financial Crime Bureau. "The Swiss bank has already flagged the transaction as suspicious under the international anti-money laundering treaty. Your accounts are frozen. The London police are entering your building right now."
On the video screen, the heavy oak doors of Julianâs London office were suddenly kicked open by armed officers. Julian let out a pathetic, high-pitched shriek as he was slammed onto his desk and handcuffed in full view of the entire global board of directors.
Marcus looked at the remaining board members, his voice dropping to a freezing register. "Let this be an example to anyone who thinks they can play games with my family or my company. Victoria Hastings is currently in a federal holding facility. Julian is in handcuffs. If anyone else has been taking dirty money from Victoria, I suggest you resign before the end of this meeting."

Within three minutes, four senior executives submitted their immediate resignations via email. The corporate purge was swift, ruthless, and terrifyingly efficient.
Maya turned to Marcus, her hand gently resting over his. "The board is clean. Now, it's time to deal with the root of the poison."
