Chapter 2 - The Mirage of Power

The private study inside the villa was dead silent. The only sound was the rhythmic ticking of a grandfather clock. Marcus had changed into a dry shirt, but his expression remained frozen in a mask of pure fury. Across from him sat Ethan, the head of elite security, and Sophia, the familyās chief legal advisor.
On the massive mahogany table lay a single black dossier. It contained the financial history of Victoria Hastingsāthe woman who had lived as Marcusās stepmother for the last decade, pretending to be the co-founder of the Vance empire.
"She genuinely believes she owns the board," Marcus said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. "Sheās been leveraging her alleged 'heritage' to sign illegal logistics contracts behind my back."
"Sheās a fraud, Marcus," Sophia said, opening the folder to reveal a series of forged birth certificates, altered trust funds, and secret bank accounts tied to offshore shell companies. "When your father passed away ten years ago, he left a secret clause in the corporate charter. Victoria was only allowed to live in this villa and receive a monthly stipend as long as she maintained the absolute safety and dignity of the Vance family name. The moment she posed a physical threat to any member of the direct bloodline, her rights were automatically revoked."
"And Maya is the direct bloodline," Ethan added, tapping the screen of his tablet to show the real property deeds. "This villa didn't belong to your father, Marcus. It belonged to Maya's grandfather, the original founder of the global shipping lanes. Your father merely managed it. Victoria spent ten years trying to buy out a ghost."
Just then, the door to the study opened, and Maya walked in. She was wearing a soft cashmere robe, her pale face showing the exhaustion of the ordeal, but her eyes were sharp and clear. The villaās obstetrician had confirmed that the baby was perfectly healthy, shielded from the impact by Maya's protective instincts and Marcusās lightning-fast rescue.
Marcus immediately stood up, moving to her side and guiding her gently to a plush armchair. "You should be resting, Maya. The doctors said you need absolute quiet."
"I am quiet, Marcus," Maya said, her voice steady despite the trauma. "But I want to see the look on her face when the illusion shatters. Victoria has spent years treating me like a penniless inconvenience, an orphan girl you brought home out of pity. She needs to know exactly who built the chair sheās been sitting on."
Downstairs in the grand formal living room, Victoria was being held under house arrest by three security guards. She was pacing the floor, her heels clicking aggressively against the marble. She was furious, but she wasn't completely broken yet. She still believed she had an ace up her sleeve.
When Marcus, Maya, and the legal team walked down the grand staircase, Victoria stopped pacing and sneered.
"Marcus, this little stunt is going to cost you the entire European market," Victoria hissed, adjusting her designer blazer. "My brother controls the shipping manifests in Rotterdam. If I call him, your cargo ships won't be allowed to dock for the next six months. You will lose hundreds of millions. Drop these ridiculous charges, let me leave with my dignity, and we can pretend this little pool incident never happened."
Sophia stepped forward, a cold, professional smile on her lips. "Miss Hastings, I suggest you shut your mouth before you add federal extortion to your list of crimes."
"Don't speak to me, you glorified clerk!" Victoria snapped. "I am the matriarch of this house!"
"You are a guest who has overstayed her welcome by ten years," Maya said, stepping out from behind Marcus. The soft, gentle girl Victoria used to bully was gone. In her place stood the true heiress of the Vance-Leighton dynasty.
Maya tossed a thick, leather-bound book onto the table. It was the original 1920 founding ledger of the global shipping lanes.
"Look at the first name on that deed, Victoria," Maya said, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Albert Leighton. My grandfather. He bought this land, built this villa, and gave your late husband his very first job as a clerk. Your husband didn't build this empire. He was a trusted servant who married youāa greedy woman who thought she could steal the throne while the true heiress was growing up."
Victoria stared at the ledger, her eyes widening as she recognized the golden seal of the Leighton family. "No... no, this is impossible. Your father was an ordinary academic! You were raised in a normal suburban house!"
May you like
"Because my father wanted me to grow up with values, not with the rot of greed that consumed you," Maya replied coldly. "Your brother in Rotterdam? He was fired three hours ago. The international maritime authority has already seized his accounts for taking bribes from your shell companies. You have no leverage, Victoria. You have nothing."
Victoria staggered back, her hand flying to the back of a sofa to steady herself. The reality was crashing down on her like a tidal wave. The wealth, the luxury, the power she had flaunted for a decade was nothing but a borrowed mirage. And time was up.
