Chapter 5 - The Reckoning

Through the blinding curtain of falling water, Emily emerged from the hedge, holding all three boys beneath her broad navy coat, keeping them dry and safe from the flying debris.

Richard stumbled toward them through the floodwater, his eyes wide with an emotion he had never shown in his entire public or private life: absolute, raw vulnerability.

He dropped to his knees in the rushing water at Emily’s feet.

"Are they okay? Are you okay?" Richard choked out, his voice cracking as he reached for his children.

This time, the boys didn't pull away. Seeing their father drenched, bruised, and bleeding from the knuckle, Ethan reached out his small, mud-stained hand and touched Richard’s cheek.

"Daddy fought the bad man," Ethan whispered in awe.

Richard wrapped his arms around all three of his sons, pulling them against his chest, burying his face into their wet hair. Tears mixed with the cascading rainwater on his face as he held them tighter than he ever had in their five years of life.

"I'm sorry," Richard sobbed softly, his shoulders shaking. "I'm so sorry... I didn't protect you. I didn't listen."

He looked up at Emily, who stood above them, her yellow gloves soaked, her hair plastered to her forehead, standing like an unyielding shield between his family and destruction.

"Emily..." Richard’s voice was barely a whisper over the roar of the water hydrant. "I... I don't even have the right to ask for your forgiveness."

"We need to get them inside, Mr. Hawthorne," Emily said quietly, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "They're freezing, and the police will be here in two minutes."

The wail of multiple sirens echoed in the distance, growing louder as four municipal police cruisers and an emergency vehicle rounded the far corner of the avenue.

Ten minutes later, the street was secured by armed officers. Sterling was cuffed and loaded into the back of a police cruiser, while officers pulled a screaming, disheveled Victoria from the ruined SUV, snapping steel handcuffs around her wrists as federal agents arrived to seize her financial records.

Inside the mansion’s warm living room, the triplets were wrapped in thick fleece blankets, sitting on the long velvet sofa, drinking hot chocolate that Emily had prepared herself in the kitchen. Barnaby, the golden retriever, was lying comfortably at their feet, his bandaged tail thumping softly against the rug.

Richard stood near the fireplace, holding a cup of untouched tea. His high-priced lawyers were standing near the door, quietly taking notes as federal agents confirmed the recovery of the stolen thirty-two million dollars from Victoria’s seized accounts.

When the officers finally left, closing the heavy oak doors behind them, the massive house grew quiet again.

Richard turned away from his lawyers, walking slowly across the Persian rug until he stopped in front of Emily, who was finishing packing her small canvas bag with her personal items from the kitchen staff room.

"Your suitcase was destroyed in the street," Richard said quietly, holding a leather travel bag in his hand. "I had my assistant bring a replacement."

"Thank you, sir," Emily replied politely, placing her yellow gloves into the side pocket. "I’ll be taking the evening bus back to the city now that the boys are safe and the police have taken your statement."

She picked up the bag and turned toward the door.

"Emily, wait," Richard said.
