Chapter 2 - The Escape Attempt

The SUV didn't slow down as it approached the group gathered in the middle of the road. It veered violently toward the sidewalk, its tires mounting the curb with a sharp crunch of rubber and metal before slamming to a halt twenty yards past them.
The driver’s side door swung open, and Victoria Lane stepped out.
She was no longer the picture of refined elegance she had presented in the mansion. Her platinum blonde hair was pulled back into a messy knot, her designer trench coat was half-unbuttoned, and she was carrying two heavy leather duffel bags slung over her shoulders. Her face was flushed with frantic energy, her eyes darting around the street like a trapped animal.
"Richard!" Victoria shouted, her voice sharp and strained. "What are you doing down here with the help?! Get away from her! She's dangerous—she turned the boys against me!"
Richard stood up slowly. The helpless terror in his face evaporated, replaced by a dark, suffocating rage that made even the air around him seem to grow heavy. He stepped forward, putting himself between Victoria and the group on the ground.
"Victoria," Richard said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "Why are your bags packed? And why are my sons covered in blood?"
Victoria hesitated, her foot twitching toward the SUV’s open door. "They... they broke into my private room! They tripped over a bottle of red wine in the cellar, Richard! The dog tried to bite me when I tried to clean them up! I had to defend myself!"
"Barnaby doesn't have teeth in the front, Victoria," Emily called out from the ground, holding the triplets close. "He's twelve years old. He couldn't bite a piece of soft bread, let alone a human being."
Victoria’s jaw clenched. She reached into her coat pocket, her fingers clutching something tightly. "Richard, listen to me. She's laying a trap. The Rolex—"
"Forget the damn watch!" Richard roared, stepping closer to her, his fists clenched at his sides. "What did you do to my children?!"
"I was trying to discipline them!" Victoria shrieked, her composed facade completely disintegrating into hysterical anger. "They are undisciplined brats, Richard! They ruin everything! You spend half your time obsessing over them instead of focusing on the merger! I did what needed to be done so we could send them to the Zurich academy next month!"
Richard stopped dead in his tracks. "The Zurich academy? I never agreed to send them to Switzerland."
"Because you're weak!" Victoria spat, taking two steps back toward her vehicle. "You're soft! You let a thirty-thousand-dollar-a-year nanny dictate how you raise the heirs to Hawthorne Enterprises! Well, it doesn't matter now. The transfer wires went through twenty minutes ago."
Richard’s eyes narrowed in confusion. "What transfer wires?"
From inside Victoria’s SUV, a metallic click sounded. A man stepped out from the passenger side—a tall, broad-shouldered man in a dark tactical jacket, wearing dark sunglasses despite the clouds.
Emily recognized him immediately. He was Victor Sterling—Victoria’s supposed "financial advisor" who had been visiting the estate twice a week for the past month under the guise of managing her trust fund.

Sterling drew a sleek silver handgun from beneath his jacket, pointing it directly at Richard’s chest.
"Stay right there, Mr. Hawthorne," Sterling said smoothly, his voice devoid of emotion. "Or this conversation gets significantly messier."
