Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Marble

The three boys crashed into Emily’s knees, their tiny arms wrapping around her waist so tightly that she nearly lost her footing on the concrete pavement. Ethan buried his face into the fabric of her navy uniform, sobbing hysterically, while Noah and Liam clung to her yellow-gloved hands, their small bodies shaking violently.

"Miss Emily! Don't leave us!" Ethan wailed, his voice hoarse from screaming. "Please! Don't let the bad lady hurt us!"

Emily immediately dropped to her knees in the middle of the street, ignoring the dirt ruining her uniform. Her eyes scanned their torn clothes, her heart hammering against her ribs. The dark red stains on their arms weren't their own blood. It was wet, sticky, and smelled faintly of copper and chemical solvent.

"Shh, I'm here. I'm right here," Emily whispered, pulling all three boys into a protective embrace, her hands hovering over their shoulders to avoid touching whatever was on their sleeves. "Look at me. Are you hurt? Did anyone cut you?"

"It's not ours," Liam gasped, wiping his nose with his forearm, leaving a smear of black dirt across his cheek. "It's... it's the doggy. And the closet lady."

Richard reached them three seconds later, chest heaving, his expensive tailored jacket thrown off somewhere along the driveway, his silk tie loosened and crooked. His face was ghostly pale, devoid of the arrogant certainty he had displayed in the foyer just twenty minutes prior.

"Ethan! Noah! Liam!" Richard fell to his knees beside Emily, reaching out to touch his eldest son's shoulder. "My God, what happened?! Why are you bleeding? What did you do?!"

The moment Richard reached for them, all three boys flinched hard, pushing deeper into Emily's lap, hiding behind her arms as if their father were a stranger.

"Don't touch us!" Noah screamed, glaring at Richard through tear-filled eyes. "You threw Miss Emily away! You let Victoria hit Barnaby!"

Richard froze, his outstretched hand trembling in mid-air. "What... what are you talking about? Who hit Barnaby?"

Barnaby was the family's twelve-year-old golden retriever, a gentle, senior dog that had belonged to the boys' late mother.

"She put the red water on him!" Liam cried, his tiny voice echoing down the quiet suburban street. "The bad lady! She locked Barnaby in the room under the stairs and hit him with her shoe because he barked at her bag! And then she tried to lock us in the dark room so we wouldn't tell!"

Emily looked up from the boys, her eyes locking onto Richard’s with a fierce, burning coldness. "You didn't even check on them after you threw me out, did you? You went straight to comfort your fiancée while your five-year-old sons were being assaulted in their own home."

"I... I was in my study," Richard stammered, the color returning to his face only to flush red with sudden, sickening realization. "Victoria said they were taking a nap in their room. She said she was going to pack her things for our trip to the city..."

"She was locking them in the basement wine cellar, Richard," Emily said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp tone that cut through his excuses. "Look at their wrists! Those aren't scratches from running—those are carpet burns from being dragged!"

Richard looked down. Circular red welts marked the delicate skin of his children's wrists. The truth hit him like a physical blow, stripping away years of corporate authority, leaving only a horrified father staring at the evidence of his own blind foolishness.

Before Richard could speak, the distant sound of heavy tires screeching around the estate’s security gates shattered the moment.

A high-end black SUV tore down the street toward them, its engine roaring, headlights cutting through the afternoon light.
