Chapter 1 - The Weight of Justice

The echoes of the shattering crystal vase still vibrated through the grand hall of the Sterling Countryside Estate. Chloe, the woman in the emerald silk dress, stood frozen, her hands suspended in mid-air as if she could somehow catch the pieces of her ruined deception. Her razor-sharp designer stilettos, which had just been grinding into Ava's hand, now trembled violently against the blood-stained marble.

"Lucas... please," Chloe stammered, her voice stripped of its previous venom, replaced by a desperate, high-pitched whine. "The security footage... it can be manipulated! You know how cunning she is! She’s a social climber! She planned this to drive a wedge between us!"

Lucas didn't even look back at her. His focus was entirely on Ava, who was curled in his arms like a fragile bird caught in a winter storm. He could feel her rapid, shallow breathing against his chest, her hands clutching his charcoal suit jacket as if letting go meant falling into an abyss. Her hand—the one Chloe had callously crushed—was already swelling, angry red welts and broken skin leaking a thin trail of blood onto his white dress shirt.

"Call Dr. Evans. Now," Lucas commanded, his voice a low, vibrating growl that sent a shiver of terror through every servant standing in the shadows. "If the medical helicopter isn't on the lawn in ten minutes, everyone in this house is fired."

"Right away, Sir!" the head butler squeaked, sprinting toward the landline, completely ignoring Chloe’s furious glares.

Lucas carefully stood up, lifting Ava effortlessly. Her eight-month pregnant belly pressed gently against him, a stark reminder of the innocent life Chloe had just endangered. As he turned toward the grand staircase, Chloe rushed forward, foolishly reaching out to grab his sleeve.

"You can't just take her side!" Chloe screamed, her mask completely slipping, revealing the ugly, envious monster beneath. "I am your fiancée! My family controls thirty percent of Sterling logistics! You need me! She is nothing but a surrogate, a nameless nobody your mother brought in from the streets!"

Lucas stopped. He didn't turn around, but his shoulders went rigid. The air in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

"First," Lucas said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. "The engagement was an arrangement by my mother, one I never signed. As of thirty seconds ago, it is null and void. Second, Ava is not a nobody. She is my wife."

Gasps rippled through the gathered guests and servants. Chloe’s eyes widened so far they looked ready to pop. "Wife?! You’re lying! You wouldn't marry a beggar!"

"We registered our marriage in secret six months ago," Lucas replied coldly. "I kept it hidden to protect her from the snakes in my family. Clearly, I didn't hide her well enough. Harrison!"

A towering security detail stepped forward from the entrance. "Yes, Mr. Sterling?"

"Throw Chloe out. Do not let her pack her bags. Do not let her call her driver. Drag her to the edge of the estate gates and leave her there. If she sets foot on Sterling property again, shoot for trespassing."

"Lucas! No! You can't do this to me!" Chloe shrieked as Harrison and another guard grabbed her arms, lifting her off her feet. Her emerald dress caught on the jagged pieces of the broken vase, tearing loudly as she was dragged down the hall, her screams echoing until the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind her.

Lucas didn't waste another second. He carried Ava up the stairs, his heart pounding not from anger, but from a profound, terrifying fear of losing the only woman who had ever shown him genuine warmth.
