Chapter 5 - The Reconstruction of the Soul

Six months later.

The wreckage of the Vance family was complete. Andrew Vance was sentenced to twelve years in federal prison with no possibility of parole. Because his name was thoroughly ruined, his former high-society friends completely erased him from their memory.

Margaret, stripped of her wealth and her precious social standing, was forced to move into a tiny, subsidized apartment in the outer suburbs—the very kind of neighborhood she had spent her life mocking. Brenda was serving a three-year sentence for the theft of the Escalante emerald, her dreams of becoming a high-society lady permanently crushed.

Meanwhile, the city had moved on. The name Vance Global was gone, replaced by Escalante Horizon, a premier, ethical real estate and green infrastructure conglomerate.

I sat in a beautiful glass conservatory in the center of the Escalante estate, sipping tea. The past six months had been a whirlwind of corporate restructuring and personal healing. I had spent time traveling, reconnecting with my true passions, and shedding the heavy armor of the silent, mistreated wife.

"You look peaceful, Mariana," a deep, warm voice said from the entrance.

I looked up to see Gabriel Sterling walking into the conservatory. Gabriel was the chief international counsel for the Escalante family, a brilliant lawyer who had worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure the Vance liquidation went flawlessly. Unlike Andrew’s loud, aggressive arrogance, Gabriel carried a quiet, grounded confidence. His eyes were always filled with deep respect whenever he looked at me.

"I am peaceful, Gabriel," I smiled, gesturing for him to sit down. "For the first time in four years, I don't feel like I’m carrying the weight of ungrateful people on my back."

Gabriel set a folder on the table, but instead of talking about business, he reached out and gently placed his hand over mine. His touch was warm and reassuring. "The final transition is complete. Escalante Horizon just launched its first public housing initiative—providing free, high-quality homes to low-income families. The project you designed completely by yourself."

"Thank you, Gabriel. I couldn't have handled the legal battles without you."

"Mariana," Gabriel said softly, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart flutter slightly. "I didn't do it just because it was my job. I’ve watched you for four years protect people who didn't deserve you. I always knew who you truly were—the most brilliant, resilient woman I’ve ever met. Now that the storm is over... I want to be the one who protects you. If you’ll let me."

I looked at him, feeling a gentle warmth blooming in my chest. For the first time, someone wasn't asking me to save them. Someone was offering to stand by my side.

"Let’s start with dinner tonight, Gabriel," I replied, a genuine, radiant smile breaking across my face. "No business. Just us."
