Chapter 1 - The Midnight Blackout

The luxury SUV glided through the rain-slicked streets of the metropolis, the hum of the engine a stark contrast to the chaotic storm I had left behind. Inside the vehicle, the air was warm, smelling of rich leather and expensive cologne.
My father’s chief advisor, Harrison, sat across from me in the custom cabin. His face was a mask of cold professionalism, but his eyes softened when he looked at the swelling on my cheek.
"Young Mistress," Harrison said, his voice dropping into a dangerous octave. "Master Escalante is furious. If you give the word, we can ensure Andrew Vance disappears from the face of this earth by midnight."
"No," I replied, leaning my head against the cool glass window. I opened my worn brown leather bag—the one Margaret had ridiculed for four years—and pulled out a sleek, titanium encrypted ledger. "Death is too easy, Harrison. Andrew worships his status. Margaret worships her pride. Brenda worships his wealth. To truly destroy them, I must let them watch their god turn to dust."
I tapped the screen. The Escalante family emblem—a golden phoenix—flashed briefly before revealing the financial matrix of Vance Global. For four years, the world believed Andrew Vance was a financial prodigy who had single-handedly built a multi-billion-dollar real estate empire. They didn't know that every major contract, every line of credit, and every zoning permit had been secretly guaranteed by the Escalante Trust. I was the anonymous shadow chairperson. Andrew was merely the face I chose to put on the billboard.
"The emergency clauses have been triggered," Harrison reported, handing me a glass of water. "At exactly 11:30 PM, all liquidity pools backed by our family office will be withdrawn. The bank accounts holding the operating capital for Vance Global will be frozen for 'compliance audits.' And the deed to the mansion..." Harrison paused, a cold smile touching his lips. "It was never in Andrew's name. It belongs to a subsidiary owned entirely by you."
Meanwhile, back at the mansion, the party was still in full swing. Andrew was nursing a glass of nineteen-year-old scotch, his arm wrapped tightly around Brenda’s waist.
"To the departure of the dead weight," Margaret announced, raising her glass to the remaining guests. "Tomorrow, we will officially introduce Brenda as the true lady of this estate. A woman of elegance, not a charity case."
"Thank you, Mother," Brenda purred, kissing Andrew’s cheek. "I promise I will never embarrass the Vance family the way Mariana did. By the way, Andrew, darling, did you see the cheap bag she was holding? She looked like a beggar."
Andrew laughed, his chest swelling with arrogance. "She actually thought she owned this place. Delusional. Let her sleep on the streets tonight. It will remind her of where she came from."
Exactly at 11:30 PM, the grand crystal chandeliers overhead flickered violently.
Then, the music stopped.
The central air conditioning died, leaving the grand hall suddenly stiflingly hot. The smart-home system hissed, and the massive electronic security gates at the front of the estate slammed shut automatically, locking everyone inside.
"What is happening?" Margaret frowned, setting her glass down. "Andrew, call the maintenance team. The backup generators should have kicked in."
Before Andrew could pull out his phone, the main projection screen in the ballroom—usually reserved for displaying Vance Global’s stock performance—flashed bright red.
A single message appeared in bold, black letters: [LIQUIDITY COLLAPSE: ALL ACCOUNTS FROZEN BY THE ESCALANTE TRUST. CHAIRPERSON ACCESS REVOKED.]
Andrew’s phone began to vibrate so violently it nearly slipped from his hand. It wasn't one call. It was twenty. The Chief Financial Officer, the Head of Legal, the prime brokers, and the major shareholders were all calling at the same time.
He answered the CFO’s call, his voice cracking slightly. "Thomas? What's going on with the server?"

"Andrew! We're ruined!" Thomas screamed into the receiver, his voice echoing in the silent ballroom. "The secret credit lines! The anonymous trust that has been backing us for four years just pulled out! Every single dollar in our corporate and personal accounts has been locked! The banks are demanding immediate repayment of our four-hundred-million-dollar short-term loans! If we don't pay by 9:00 AM tomorrow, Vance Global enters automatic bankruptcy!"
Andrew’s face drained of all color. The scotch glass slipped from his fingers, shattering on the very marble floor where he had ordered me to crawl.
