Two weeks passed. The dark clouds hanging over the Thorne family finally began to part.
Khloe was well enough to be discharged from her regular room, though she refused to leave the hospital. She spent every waking moment in the NICU, sitting by the incubator, singing softly to her baby boy, whom they named Liam—meaning strong protector.
Miraculously, little Liam proved to be a fighter. Day by day, his breathing improved. The tubes were slowly removed, one by one.
On a bright Tuesday morning, the NICU nurse smiled warmly at Khloe. "Would you like to hold him today, Mrs. Thorne? Kangaroo care is the best medicine."

Khloe burst into happy tears. Marcus carefully helped lift the tiny baby and placed him against Khloe’s bare chest. As Liam felt his mother’s skin and heard her heartbeat, his tiny hand reached out and curled around Khloe’s pinky finger.
Marcus wrapped his large arms around both of them, burying his face in Khloe's hair. They had survived the storm.
