Chapter 5 - The Unraveling

For three days, the Sterling estate was transformed into a fortress.

Armed private security guards stood every ten feet along the perimeter fence. The local police department, under intense pressure from Arthur's legal team, had launched a full-scale investigation into the break-in. Dr. Harrison was in police custody, singing like a bird to avoid a twenty-year prison sentence for attempted murder, prescription fraud, and conspiracy.

Inside the master suite of the west wing, Elena lay in a massive canopy bed, a white bandage wrapped neatly around her head.

The door clicked open softly, and Arthur walked in carrying a silver tray with a bowl of soup and a mug of tea. He had shed his designer suits for simple dark trousers and a black cashmere sweater. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes, but his presence was as commanding as ever.

"You shouldn't be playing waiter, Mr. Sterling," Elena said, trying to sit up.

"Sit back down," Arthur ordered gently, setting the tray on the nightstand. He sat on the edge of the bed, picking up the spoon. "And stop calling me Mr. Sterling. You saved my mother's fortune, my family legacy, and quite frankly, my life. I think we're past 'Mr. Sterling.'"

Elena looked at him, her heart doing a strange, fluttering dance. "Arthur, then."

"Arthur," he repeated, a soft smile playing on his lips. He fed her a spoonful of soup, watching her carefully to make sure she was swallowing without pain. "The police have issued a warrant for Beatrice's arrest. She tried to flee to Switzerland yesterday morning, but my security team intercepted her private jet at the airport."

"What will happen to her?"

"She will spend the rest of her life in a federal prison," Arthur said coldly. "Along with Julianne Vance's father, who was helping launder the money Beatrice was stealing from Doña Victoria's accounts."

Elena sighed, leaning back against the pillows. "It's finally over."

"Not quite," Arthur said softly. He set the bowl down and reached into his jacket pocket, pulling out a thick manila envelope. "The documents you saved from the fire... they were partially damaged, but the legal team was able to restore the critical sections."

"And?"

"My father left a specific clause in his will regarding my mother's long-term care," Arthur explained, looking deep into Elena's eyes. "It states that if my mother ever required full-time personal care, the person designated as her guardian would receive full executive voting rights alongside me... provided that person was bound to the family by blood or by marriage."

Elena froze. Her breath caught in her throat. "Marriage?"

"Beatrice knew about this clause," Arthur continued, his voice dropping to a low, intense whisper. "That's why she was trying to force my mother into an asylum before I could find someone... before I could marry."

"Arthur... I don't understand. Why are you telling me this?"

Arthur took her hand, his long fingers intertwining with hers. The warmth of his skin sent a shiver straight down her spine.

"Julianne Vance was trying to force my hand for two years to get that legal power," Arthur said softly. "Every socialite in this city wanted that seat next to me. But none of them cared if my mother lived or died. None of them would have thrown themselves into a burning room to save my name."

He leaned in closer, until his face was just inches from hers. "I don't just need a guardian for my mother, Elena. I need you. In my life. In this house. By my side."

Elena felt her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird. "Arthur... I'm a poor girl from the east side. I was a maid four days ago. Your board members, the media... they will tear us apart."

"Let them try," Arthur snarled softly, his eyes flashing with fierce protectiveness. "I fought off my own family to protect what's mine. Do you really think I care what a bunch of reporters think?"

"And what if I say no?" Elena teased gently, though her eyes were filled with tears. "What if I just want to go back to being your mother's companion?"

Arthur smiled—a real, breathtakingly handsome smile that transformed his stern face entirely. He reached up, gently cradling her cheek in his hand, his thumb tracing her cheekbone.

"Then I will spend every single day of my life courting you until you say yes," he whispered.

May you like

Before Elena could answer, the door swung open, and Doña Victoria walked into the room without her wheelchair, leaning lightly on a wooden cane. Her eyes were bright, clear, and completely alert for the first time in months, free from the dark fog of Nervosa-7.

"She already said yes, Arthur," the old woman said, a playful twinkle in her eyes. "Stop talking like a lawyer and kiss the girl."
