Chapter 3 - The Gala of Knives

"I'm neither," Elena said, refusing to back down even as her pulse hammered in her throat. She looked straight into Arthur’s stormy gray eyes. "I'm observant. And if you brought me here just to be a silent prop while someone slowly erases your mother's mind, then you hired the wrong person."

Arthur stared at her for three agonizing seconds. Then, slowly, the tension in his shoulders relaxed, and he let out a low, breathless laugh that sounded entirely devoid of humor.

"Good," he said quietly, stepping back. "Because if you had backed down, I would have had you thrown out the front gates."

Elena blinked, stunned. "You... you knew?"

"I suspected," Arthur corrected, walking over to his mother and gently kissing her gray hair. Doña Victoria smiled vaguely, reaching up to pat his cheek. "My mother began losing her memory shortly after my father died six months ago. The family doctors—all chosen by my aunt Beatrice—insisted it was rapid-onset vascular dementia. But every time I tried to bring in independent specialists from London or Boston, the medical records went missing, or the doctors suddenly backed out of their consultations."

"They're isolating her," Elena realized, her mind racing. "Why? What does Doña Victoria have that they need?"

"Voting power," Arthur revealed, his tone turning cold and businesslike. "My father's will left forty percent of Sterling Enterprises to my mother, twenty percent to me, and thirty percent distributed among the board members, including Beatrice. As long as my mother is deemed mentally incompetent, her voting rights are transferred to a court-appointed custodian."

"Let me guess," Elena said softly. "Your aunt Beatrice is applying for custody."

"The hearing is in three weeks," Arthur said. "And the public debut of her 'incapacity' will be tonight at the Sterling Annual Charity Gala."

"Tonight?"

"Yes," Arthur said, turning to look at Elena with an intensity that made her stomach flutter. "And you are coming with me."

By seven o'clock that evening, the grand ballroom of the city's most exclusive country club was glowing with crystal chandeliers and filled with the elite of high society. Men in tailored tuxedos laughed over champagne while women in gowns worth more than Elena’s entire life savings moved across the marble floor like velvet swans.

Among them was Julianne Vance, dressed in a sweeping red silk gown, surrounded by a group of wealthy socialites. She was laughing, but her eyes kept darting toward the main entrance, waiting for revenge. She had suffered the humiliation of a lifetime at the hotel yesterday, and her family's social standing had taken a devastating hit. Tonight, she was determined to see Arthur Sterling pay.

The double doors swung open, and the herald announced: "Mr. Arthur Sterling, Doña Victoria Sterling, and Miss Elena Reyes."

A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom.

Arthur walked in slowly, pushing his mother's wheelchair. Doña Victoria looked radiant, dressed in an elegant midnight-blue lace gown, her gray hair styled into a classic chignon. But it wasn't Victoria or Arthur who drew every eye in the room.

It was the woman walking beside them.

Elena wore a custom-fitted black velvet gown with a simple diamond necklace sparkling against her collarbone. Her blonde hair had been swept up, revealing her delicate neck and the sharp, aristocratic line of her jawline. Without the faded navy uniform, she didn't look like a maid. She looked like royalty.

"Is that... the maid from yesterday?" Julianne whispered to her mother, her fingers clenching around her glass so tightly the stem nearly snapped. "How dare he bring her here?!"

Arthur paused near the top of the grand staircase, turning to Elena. In full view of the entire room, he bent his head slightly and offered her his arm.

"You look breathtaking," he murmured, his voice low enough that only she could hear.

Elena felt a blush rise to her cheeks, but she kept her head high, placing her gloved hand on his arm. "Is this part of the strategy, Mr. Sterling? Shocking your enemies with a dressed-up servant?"

"Partly," Arthur admitted with a faint smirk. "The other part is that I wanted to see Julianne's face when she realized you clean up better than she does."

Before Elena could reply, Beatrice appeared from the crowd, flanked by two men in dark suits. Her face was a mask of cold fury, though she maintained a fake smile for the surrounding cameras.

"Arthur," Beatrice said smoothly. "What is the meaning of this spectacle? You brought her to the foundation gala? And you brought your mother out in public in her delicate condition?"

"My mother is feeling quite well tonight, Aunt Beatrice," Arthur replied evenly. "Elena made sure she took her proper vitamins today. Unadulterated ones."

Beatrice's smile wavered for a split second, but she quickly recovered. "Well, how wonderful. But as head of the foundation board, I must request that your... companion... remain in the VIP lounge. This floor is reserved for major donors."

"Miss Reyes is not just my companion tonight, Beatrice," Arthur said, his voice rising just enough to capture the attention of the surrounding guests. "She is my official representative for the new medical oversight committee I am establishing for the Sterling Foundation."

Julianne stepped forward, unable to contain herself any longer. "This is a joke! Arthur, you're letting a disgraced hospital drop-out handle foundation matters? Do you know why she was fired from the public hospital two years ago?!"

The room fell completely silent. All eyes shifted to Elena.

Elena’s heart froze. The dark secret she had spent two years running from—the reason she had ended up working as a hotel maid for minimum wage—was about to be dragged into the light.

Julianne smiled triumphantly, holding up her phone. "My father did some research after yesterday's incident. Elena Reyes didn't leave the hospital voluntarily. She was dismissed for stealing controlled substances from the pharmacy!"

A shockwave of whispers exploded across the ballroom. Beatrice’s eyes lit up with predatory delight.

Arthur turned his head slowly to look at Elena. His face was unreadable. "Elena... is this true?"

Elena swallowed hard, her voice trembling slightly, but her eyes held Arthur's without flinching. "I took the medication, yes."

Julianne laughed aloud. "You see?! She's a thief! She's a criminal!"

"I took three doses of pediatric cardiac medicine," Elena continued, turning to address the entire crowd, her voice growing stronger with every word. "Because a seven-year-old child in the ward was dying, the hospital's bureaucratic approval system was taking four hours, and he didn't have thirty minutes. I saved his life, got fired for breaking protocol, and paid for the medication out of my own pocket three days later."

She looked straight at Julianne. "I'd do it again tonight if a child needed it."

The silence in the room changed tone instantly. The scandalized whispers softened into impressed murmurs among the older, more respected donors.

Arthur stepped forward, taking Elena's hand in his and lifting it to his lips, kissing her knuckles in front of everyone.

"And that," Arthur said, turning his dark gaze onto Julianne and Beatrice, "is precisely why she is the only person in this room I trust with my mother's life."

Before Beatrice could utter another word, a waiter rushed up to Arthur, his face white with panic. He whispered something into Arthur's ear.

Arthur’s face turned entirely gray. He dropped Elena's hand and looked toward the grand doors leading to the private estate gardens.

"What is it?" Elena asked, a sudden wave of dread washing over her.

"The security feeds at my estate just went down," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling for the first time since Elena had met him. "And someone just accessed my father's private vault."
