Chapter 5 - The Aftermath of the Blast

Within forty-eight hours, the empire Bradley had built on lies completely collapsed.

The news of the boardroom meltdown leaked to the press via one of the board members who had immediately resigned to protect his own reputation. The headlines were brutal: “Manhattan Tech Mogul Tricked by Mistress After Secret Vasectomy Exposed in Multi-Million Dollar Divorce.”

The corporate board of the Bennett Group held an emergency vote and stripped Bradley of his CEO title, citing moral turpitude and the misappropriation of corporate funds linked to the shell companies. Without his salary, and facing a massive fraud lawsuit from my legal team, Bradley was financially ruined.

Even worse for him, Eleanor entirely cut him off. The proud matriarch could forgive a lot of things, but being made a public laughingstock and being tricked into almost financing a stranger's child was something she could never forgive. Tiffany packed her bags and vanished from New York overnight, her dreams of high-society luxury shattered into a thousand pieces.

One evening, about a month after the showdown, my phone rang. It was an unknown number. I answered it.

"Sarah..."

It was Bradley’s voice. But the smug, arrogant man from the mediator's office was gone. He sounded broken, hollow, and incredibly old.

"What do you want, Bradley?" I asked, standing on the terrace of my Surrey home, watching the sunset cast a golden glow over the English garden.

"I lost everything, Sarah," he whispered. "The penthouse is gone. The board kicked me out. My mother won't take my calls. I’m staying in a cheap motel outside Jersey. Please... just let me talk to Connor and Madison. I’m their father."

I looked out at the lawn, where Connor was currently teaching Madison how to kick a soccer ball. Their laughter drifted up to the terrace, pure and untainted by the poison of their father's world.

"You had ten years to be their father, Bradley," I said, my voice entirely devoid of malice, filled only with a quiet, final truth. "But you were too busy being selfish. You told Connor soccer camp was too expensive while you bought diamonds for another woman. You let Madison believe she wasn't worth your time. You don't get to call them now just because you're lonely."

"Sarah, please—"

"The court gave me sole custody, Bradley. When they are older, if they want to find you, that will be their choice. But until then, do not call this number again."

I hung up, blocked the number, and felt the last remaining weight of my past lift from my shoulders.
