Chapter 2 - The Storm Across the Atlantic

The five-hour time difference meant that by the time our flight touched down at London Heathrow, it was early morning in the UK, and late evening back in New York. The moment I stepped through arrivals, I was met by a tall, impeccably dressed man in a charcoal suit.
"Ms. Bennett?" he asked, tipping his hat. "I’m Julian Vance. Arthur Harrison asked me to ensure your transition to London was flawless."
Julian wasn’t just a solicitor; he was a top-tier international asset recovery specialist. As he escorted us to a waiting Jaguar, he handed me a brand-new iPhone. "Your new number is already programmed, Sarah. And I believe you’ll want to see what is currently happening on American social media."
I turned the phone on. The internet was already exploding.
Because I had blocked Bradley’s number, he had turned to his usual weapon of choice: public humiliation. Brittany had posted a photo on Instagram from the clinic. In the photo, Bradley and a visibly glowing Tiffany were holding a sonogram picture. The caption read: “Finally, a real expansion to the Bennett legacy! True love always wins. Out with the old, in with the pure.”
But the comments section told a vastly different story. Half an hour before the photo was posted, an anonymous whistleblower account had leaked a series of heavily redacted but undeniable wire transfer receipts to a prominent Manhattan gossip blog. The receipts showed Bradley Bennett moving hundreds of thousands of dollars out of his children’s college funds into a luxury boutique account labeled “T.V. Diamond Procurement.”
The public backlash was instantaneous. Bradley’s corporate clients—wealthy investors who valued discretion and family-man ethics—were already demanding explanations.
"He’s panicking," Julian said smoothly as we drove through the lush, green lanes of Surrey toward my late father’s estate. "Bradley called my office three times in the last two hours. He’s threatening to file international kidnapping charges."
"Let him try," I said, looking out at the rolling hills. "The custody agreement he signed yesterday morning gave me sole physical and legal custody. He didn't even read the addendum. He was too busy texting his mistress."
"Oh, it gets better," Julian chuckled, his eyes meeting mine in the rearview mirror. "He’s already hired a high-profile family lawyer to nullify the agreement, claiming he signed it under duress. But he has a much bigger problem brewing at home."
"The clinic?" I asked.
"The clinic," Julian confirmed. "According to my sources inside the Bennett family circle, Eleanor Bennett has already pledged a two-million-dollar trust fund to the unborn child. Bradley is basking in the glory. He thinks this child is his ticket to securing his mother's ultimate inheritance."
I looked down at the medical file in my lap. "He doesn't know, does he? He thinks it's a miracle."
"He has no idea," Julian replied. "But the question is, Sarah... when do you want to drop the hammer?"

I looked at my children. Connor was pointing out the window at a flock of sheep, his face bright with a joy I hadn't seen in years. Madison was humming a sweet little tune. For ten years, I had protected Bradley’s reputation. I had hidden his drinking, his cruel remarks, his financial recklessness, all to keep the peace for my children.
"We wait," I said softly. "We wait until the Bennett Group’s quarterly board meeting next week. I want everyone in that room when the truth comes out."
