Chapter 4 - Trapped in the Web

Daniel didn't flinch. The anger inside him was so absolute that it cast out all fear. "Go ahead, Brian. Pull the trigger. But you should know something—I didn't come here alone."
Suddenly, the loud wail of sirens pierced the night air. Blue and red lights began to flash through the large glass windows of the mansion.
Brian panicked, looking toward the window. Seizing the distraction, Daniel lunged forward. He grabbed Brian's wrist, twisting it violently until the gun fired harmlessly into the ceiling. Daniel slammed Brian into the marble coffee table, shattering it into pieces, and pinned him to the floor, wresting the gun away.
"Get off him!" Laura screamed, clawing at Daniel's back.
The front doors burst open, and three police officers rushed in with their weapons drawn. But to Daniel’s horror, the man leading them was Chief Henderson—the corrupt cop Sarah had warned him about.
"Drop the weapon, boy!" Henderson shouted, aiming his gun at Daniel.
Daniel slowly stood up, raising his hands, leaving the disoriented Brian on the floor. "Chief, thank God. These two tried to murder my mother. They stole her land, threw her in a drainage pit at the old quarry—"
"I don't know what you're talking about," Chief Henderson interrupted coldly. He nodded to his officers. "Arrest Daniel Carter for breaking and entering, assault with a deadly weapon, and domestic terrorism."
Laura put on a masterpiece of an act, sobbing loudly. "Oh, Chief, thank you! My brother has gone completely insane! He’s been threatening us for weeks because he wants Mom’s inheritance!"
Daniel was slammed against the wall, handcuffs roughly clicked around his wrists. As they dragged him out into the rain, Brian got up, wiping blood from his lip, a sickening smirk on his face.

"You lose, Daniel," Brian whispered as he passed. "The land is ours. And your mother won't survive the week anyway."
Thrown into the back of a police cruiser, Daniel felt a cold wave of despair. He was locked up, his mother was vulnerable, and the law was in the pockets of the monsters who had betrayed his family.
