Chapter 2 - Hospital Siege and Suspicious ToxinsThe sharp smell of antiseptic and the rhythmical beep of a heart monitor replaced the heavy scent of funeral lilies. In the Intensive Care Unit of Saint Jude Memorial Hospital, Preston lay wrapped in warm blankets, intravenous lines running into her arms. She was alive, but slipped into a medically induced coma to stabilize her dangerously low oxygen levels.

Adrian sat on a hard plastic chair beside her bed, his police uniform creased and stained with dirt. He held her hand, refusing to let go for even a single second. Payson was fast asleep on a small sofa in the corner of the room, wrapped in Adrian's leather jacket.

A knock sounded at the door, and Dr. Elena Vance, the Chief Toxicologist, stepped inside holding a digital tablet. Her expression was grave.

"Officer Salim," Dr. Vance said quietly. "We just got the preliminary blood panel back from the lab. What happened to your wife was no medical anomaly. It was a calculated murder attempt."

Adrian’s jaw tightened. "What did they do to her?"

"We found high concentrations of Tetrodotoxin in her bloodstream—a potent neurotoxin," Dr. Vance explained, zooming in on a lab report. "In precise doses, it induces complete muscle paralysis, drops the heart rate to near-indetectable levels, and slows breathing to a point where even trained paramedics would mistake the victim for dead. She was conscious inside that casket, Adrian. She could hear everything, but couldn't move until the drug started wearing off."

A cold rage washed over Adrian. Someone had deliberately paralyzed his wife, arranged for her to be pronounced dead, and placed her in a sealed casket to suffocate underground.

"Who signed her death certificate?" Adrian demanded, his voice dangerously low.

"Dr. Harold Vance... no relation to me," the doctor replied. "A private pathologist hired by your wife's family estate two days ago."

Before Adrian could ask further, the lights in the ICU hallway flickered and died. Emergency red back-up lights kicked in instantly, casting eerie crimson shadows across the room. The heartbeat monitor beeped frantically as power fluctuated.

Outside in the corridor, the heavy footsteps of rubber-soled boots echoed against the linoleum tile.

Adrian stood up immediately, placing himself between the door and the hospital bed. He reached for his service weapon, but remembered he had been forced to surrender it to Internal Affairs for routine questioning after the shooting at the funeral home. He was unarmed.

"Dr. Vance, stay behind me," Adrian whispered, scanning the room for anything that could be used as a weapon. He grabbed a heavy metal IV pole.

The door handle jiggled. Slowly, the door pushed open, revealing a tall man dressed in a doctor's lab coat, a surgical mask covering the lower half of his face. In his gloved right hand, he held a large syringe filled with a clear liquid.

"You should have let her stay in the ground, Officer," the man said, his voice muffled behind the mask. He lunged forward, aiming the syringe straight for Preston's IV port.

Adrian swung the metal IV pole with brutal force. It struck the attacker across the shoulder, knocking him off balance and sending the syringe flying onto the floor, where it shattered.

The attacker recovered quickly, throwing a sharp right hook that caught Adrian across the jaw. Adrian staggered back but countered with a knee to the man's midsection, slamming him against the wall. They grappled violently, knocking over medical trays and monitors.

Payson woke up with a start, screaming in terror as he saw his father struggling with the intruder.

"Dad!"

"Payson! Get the doctor out of here!" Adrian yelled as the intruder pulled a hidden combat knife from his coat.

The blade sliced through the air, catching Adrian’s forearm and leaving a bloody gash. Ignoring the searing pain, Adrian grabbed the attacker's wrist, twisting it violently until the knife dropped. He slammed the man's head into the concrete wall once, twice, until the assassin went limp and collapsed to the floor.

Breathing heavily, Adrian ripped the surgical mask off the unconscious man. He didn't recognize the face, but tattooed on the man's neck was a distinct symbol: a coiled viper surrounding an iron cross.

"The Syndicate..." Adrian muttered under his breath. The crest belonged to one of the most ruthless organized crime families in the state—a group Adrian had been investigating months ago before his case was abruptly shut down by his superiors.
