Chapter 10 - A Second Chance at Sunset

Six months later.
The golden afternoon sun dipped low over the horizon, casting warm amber light across the pristine white sand of a quiet coastal beach. The gentle sound of waves lapping against the shore filled the serene air.
Julian Sherrill and Richard Vance had both been sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Sherrill Industries had been completely restructured under Preston’s leadership, donating millions to victim defense funds and police reform programs. Adrian had been fully reinstated to the police force, receiving the Department's Medal of Valor for his bravery.
On the patio of a cozy beachfront home, a large wooden dining table was set for a family dinner. Fresh flowers bloomed in colorful pots around the deck, and the smell of grilled seafood drifted on the sea breeze.
Preston stood by the railing, looking out at the glittering ocean. She wore a simple white linen dress, her hair blowing softly in the wind.
Adrian walked up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked gently.
Preston smiled, leaning back against his chest. "I'm thinking about how close I came to losing all of this... and how grateful I am for every single breath I take now."
From down on the sand, the joyful laughter of twelve-year-old Payson echoed up to the deck. He was playing fetch with a golden retriever puppy they had adopted a month ago, his energetic leaps bringing a wide smile to his parents' faces.
Payson stopped, looking up toward the balcony where his parents stood. He waved wildly with both hands.
"Mom! Dad! Look what Barnaby found!" Payson shouted happily, holding up a shiny seashell.
Adrian and Preston laughed together. Adrian reached out, resting his palm softly over Preston’s hand where it lay on the railing.
Slowly, intentionally, Adrian tapped his fingers three times against the back of her hand.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Preston turned in his arms, her eyes shining with pure happiness, and tapped three times against his chest in return.
I love you.

"No more secrets," Preston whispered, bringing her lips to his in a soft, passionate kiss. "No more darkness. Just us."
"Just us," Adrian agreed, holding her tight as the sun set over the horizon, illuminating their bright, unbroken future in a blaze of endless golden light.
