CHAPTER 3: A New Foundation

CHAPTER 3: A New Foundation

The backlash from Natalie’s threats arrived faster than expected. The next morning, trashy tabloid headlines flooded the internet: "Billionaire’s New Flirt: From Retail Clerk to Palace Queen?" and "Did a Manipulative Employee Fictionalize an Abuse Scandal to Trap Alexander Thorne?"

The board of Thorne Enterprises panicked. They called an emergency meeting, demanding that Alexander distance himself from Clara to protect the stock prices.

On Friday afternoon, Alexander walked into the boutique. He looked exhausted, lines of strain etched deep into his handsome face. Clara felt a sink in her stomach. She prepared herself for the goodbye, knowing that a man of his stature couldn't afford a scandal.

"Alexander," Clara said softly, walking out from behind the counter. "I saw the news. I understand if you need me to step down. Chloe’s peace of mind is what matters most."

Alexander looked up, a slow, triumphant smile breaking through his exhaustion. He didn't look defeated; he looked like a king who had just won a war.

"Step down?" Alexander chuckled, walking over and taking her hands. "Clara, I didn't spend the last twenty-four hours fighting the board to let you leave. I spent it buying out the remaining shares of this retail group. It is now entirely a private subsidiary of Thorne Enterprises. No board. No stockholders. No one can tell me who to hire, who to love, or who to protect."

Clara gasped, her eyes wide. "You bought the whole company? Just to protect me?"

"No," Alexander murmured, stepping closer until there was no space left between them. "I did it because I realized something when Natalie threatened you. I realized that a fortress is empty without a home. And you, Clara, are my home."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, elegant velvet box. He opened it to reveal a stunning, flawless emerald ring surrounded by a halo of diamonds.

"I don't want you to be the manager of my store anymore," Alexander whispered, his dark eyes melting with a vulnerability that took her breath away. "I want you to be my wife. I want us to raise Chloe together. Will you marry me, Clara?"

Before Clara could even find her voice, a small shout came from the front of the store.

"Say yes! Say yes, Clara!"

Chloe was standing by the entrance, holding the hand of a burly bodyguard, a massive grin on her little face. She had a pink bow in her hair and was jumping up and down with excitement.

Tears of pure, overwhelming happiness spilled over Clara’s eyelashes. She looked at the powerful billionaire who had dropped to his knees on a cold marble floor for his child, and who was now offering her his heart.

"Yes," Clara choked out, a radiant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Alexander. A million times, yes."

Alexander slid the ring onto her finger, threw his arms around her waist, and lifted her off her feet, spinning her around as Chloe ran over, laughing and throwing her arms around both of their legs.

The cold, calculated world of luxury and status had finally been pierced by something money could never buy—true, unyielding love. Standing together in the warm light of the boutique, the broken child was healed, the kind soul was rewarded, and a new family had officially been born.
