CHAPTER 2: Shadows of the Past

CHAPTER 2: Shadows of the Past

Two weeks passed, and the luxury boutique underwent a complete transformation under Clara's new management. The harsh, blinding spotlights were replaced with warm, inviting ambience, and the staff was trained to treat every human being who walked through the doors with respect.

But for Clara, the biggest change wasn't the job or the sudden financial stability. It was the fact that Alexander Thorne kept coming back.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, the billionaire’s sleek black limousine would pull up outside the store. He claimed he was just checking on his investment, but he always brought Chloe with him. The little girl would run straight into Clara’s arms, holding up drawings she had made for her "favorite auntie Clara."

One evening, after the store had closed, Alexander stayed behind. He stood by the glass display cases, watching Clara meticulously fold a cashmere scarf. The powerful, untouchable billionaire looked strangely nervous.

"You're very good with her, Clara," Alexander said softly, his voice echoing in the quiet store. "Chloe hasn't laughed like that since... well, since her mother walked out on us three years ago."

Clara looked up, her heart giving a strange, fluttery thud. "She’s an amazing little girl, Alexander. She just needs to know she’s safe. Children can feel when a place lacks warmth."

Alexander stepped closer, the subtle scent of rich sandalwood and rain enveloping Clara. "I built an empire so no one could ever hurt my family again. But in doing so, I think I built a fortress that kept everyone out. Until the day you protected her."

Before Clara could answer, the silence of the boutique was violently shattered.

The glass front doors were suddenly rattled from the outside. A woman in an expensive, oversized fur coat and dark sunglasses was banging against the locked entry, a paparazzi photographer snapping photos rapidly behind her.

Alexander’s face darkened instantly. "Natalie."

Clara watched in shock as Alexander unlocked the door just enough to step outside, but the woman pushed her way past him, stepping right into the boutique. She took off her sunglasses, revealing a beautiful, sharp face twisted in arrogance. It was Natalie Vance—Beatrice’s older sister, and a high-profile socialite who had once tried to court Alexander.

"Alexander, darling!" Natalie cried, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "You ruined my sister’s life over some dramatic overreaction! Beatrice has been crying for two weeks. You can't just blacklist a Vance because of some charity-case child!"

"Get out, Natalie," Alexander growled, his body shifting instinctively to shield Clara, who was standing by the counter.

"Oh, please. And who is this?" Natalie sneered, her eyes locking onto Clara’s simple uniform. "The little maid who climbed her way into your favor? Is this what your standards have become, Alexander? Replacing high society with retail trash?"

"That 'retail trash' has more dignity in her little finger than your entire family possesses," Alexander roared, his voice finally breaking into a thunderous rage. "Your sister showed her true colors when she abused my daughter. And you are showing yours right now. If you don't leave this property immediately, my security team will drag you out in front of those cameras."

Natalie’s face twisted in ugly fury. She stepped up to Clara, slamming her designer purse against the counter. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think a billionaire is going to marry a nobody? Enjoy your little fairytale while it lasts, sweetheart. I will make sure the media knows exactly how you manipulated a lonely widower."

She spun on her heels and stormed out, the doors rattling behind her.

Clara stood frozen, her hands trembling. The reality of Alexander’s world—the paparazzi, the venomous elite, the constant danger—suddenly felt terrifyingly real. "Alexander... maybe I shouldn't be managing this store. I don't want to cause trouble for you or Chloe."

Alexander turned around, his eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion. He grabbed her hands, his palms warm and grounding. "Look at me, Clara. You aren't the trouble. You are the only real, honest thing that has entered my life in years. Don't let them scare you away."
