Chapter 4 - The Public Unraveling

The fallout was immediate, spectacular, and utterly devastating for the Vales.

Because Margaret had been a high-profile state witness for over three decades, the news of her son-in-law’s arrest for attempting to poison her swept through local media like wildfire. By afternoon, local news channels had leaked the mugshot of Evan Vale—disheveled, panicked, and stripped of his designer suit.

Margaret sat in Lena’s office at the precinct, sipping a cup of actual coffee. Claire was in the interrogation room down the hall, sobbing hysterically as her defense attorney tried to mitigate the damage.

Lena walked in, dropping a thick folder onto the desk. "Claire is singing like a canary, Margaret. She’s completely throwing Evan under the bus. She claims she thought it was just a high-dose sleeping pill to make you appear incompetent during the bank meeting. She’s desperate to avoid a conspiracy charge."

"And Evan?" Margaret asked quietly.

"Refusing to talk. But it doesn't matter," Lena smiled grimly. "We searched his digital history. The idiot bought the liquid scopolamine on the dark web using a cryptocurrency wallet linked directly to his personal email. We also found a hidden file on his laptop titled 'Margaret Estate Liquidation'. He had already drafted listings to sell your historic home."

Margaret looked down at her hands. "He owed money, didn't he?"

"Deep in debt," Lena confirmed. "He lost over two million dollars in bad offshore real estate investments last year. He was using your daughter’s name to shield his assets. If he didn’t get your power of attorney this week, his creditors were going to repossess their luxury condo and his firm was going to fire him for embezzlement."

The door opened, and Claire’s attorney stepped in, looking exhausted. "Margaret... Claire wants to see you. She’s begging for a moment to speak with her mother. She wants to explain."

Margaret stood up, smoothing her jacket. "Let’s go. I think it’s time for a final mother-daughter chat."

When Margaret walked into the gray interrogation room, Claire looked pitiful. Her makeup was smeared with tears, her hair flat, her expensive coat crumpled on the floor.

"Mom!" Claire cried, reaching across the metal table. "Mom, please, you have to believe me! I love you! Evan manipulated me! He told me you were getting older, that you were lonely, and that if we took over the estate, we could move you into a beautiful luxury retirement village close to us! He said the stress of managing the money was what was making you forgetful!"

Margaret didn't sit down. She stood over her daughter, looking at her not with anger, but with a profound, chilling pity.

"Claire, you laughed when he called me senile at dinner," Margaret said softly. "You watched me fumble, you watched me pretend to be confused, and you felt nothing but anticipation for my money. You didn't care about my health. You cared about your social status."

"No! That's not true!" Claire wept. "I was desperate! Evan said we would go bankrupt! Please, Mom, tell the detective to drop the conspiracy charges against me. I’m your daughter! Your only child!"

"You are my child," Margaret agreed, her voice hardening like tempered glass. "And because I am your mother, I am going to teach you the final lesson you clearly missed growing up: actions have consequences. I will not protect you from the law, Claire. You will face the grand jury, and you will answer for what you allowed into my home."

"Mom, please! I'll lose everything!" Claire screamed as Margaret turned her back.

"You already lost me," Margaret said, and walked out the door without looking back.
