Chapter 2 - Playing the Part

The sun rose over Margaret’s pristine estate in the historic district of the city. It was a beautiful, multi-million-dollar property that her late husband, a renowned surgeon, had left entirely to her, along with a significant investment portfolio.

At exactly 7:30 AM, a key turned in the front lock.

Margaret, sitting at her vanity upstairs, heard the heavy, arrogant footsteps of Evan Vale, followed by the softer, hesitant steps of her daughter, Claire.

Margaret took a deep breath. She had spent the last two hours applying her makeup differently—deliberately leaving her lipstick slightly smudged past the lip line, omitting her usual sharp eyeliner, and leaving her hair just a bit untamed. She wore a silk robe that was buttoned slightly askew.

"Mom? Are you awake?" Claire's voice called out from the stairs. There was a tremor of guilt in it, but it was buried under a layer of false cheerfulness.

Margaret didn't answer immediately. She waited until the bedroom door opened.

Claire stood in the doorway, looking pale. Behind her, Evan was dressed in a sharp bespoke suit, his eyes gleaming with predatory anticipation.

"Oh, Mom," Claire said, rushing forward. "You’re still in your robe? The meeting with Mr. Harrison at the bank is in an hour."

Margaret turned slowly, letting her eyes look glazed and unfocused. She stared past Claire, blinking rapidly. "Claire? Sweetie? What time is it? I... I had the strangest dream. I was at a restaurant, and there was a giant bird..."

Evan stepped forward, a wide, paternalistic smile plastered across his face. He exchanged a knowing, victorious glance with Claire. "The wine must have really knocked you out, Margaret. You see? This is what we’ve been talking about. Your memory is slipping. You forgot all about our big day today."

"Our big day?" Margaret slurred her words slightly, letting her hands tremble as she reached for a glass of water on her nightstand. She intentionally knocked it over. The glass shattered on the hardwood floor. "Oh dear! I'm so clumsy. My head... it feels like it’s filled with cotton."

"It's okay, Mom, don't touch the glass," Claire said, her voice a mix of pity and impatience. She looked at Evan. "It's working. I mean... she’s really not well today."

"Which is exactly why we need to protect her, darling," Evan said smoothly. He walked over to Margaret, placing a heavy, suffocating hand on her shoulder. The smell of his expensive cologne made her sick. "Margaret, listen to my voice very carefully. Today, we are going to see Mr. Harrison. We are going to sign those papers we discussed. The ones that let Claire and me take care of your house, your bank accounts, and your medical decisions. Do you understand?"

Margaret looked up at him, allowing a tear of pure, Oscar-worthy vulnerability to roll down her cheek. "Will you take care of me, Evan? I'm so scared. I keep forgetting things..."

"Of course I will, Margaret," Evan whispered, his voice dripping with false warmth. "I'll take care of everything. Just do exactly what I tell you today, and the confusion will all go away."

Inside her mind, the forensic toxicologist Margaret was calculating the exact prison sentence for grand larceny and elder abuse. Enjoy this moment, Evan, she thought. It’s the highest you will ever fly.

"Let's get you dressed, Mom," Claire said, picking out a drab, beige pant suit from the closet. "Something simple."

As Claire helped her into the clothing, Margaret deliberately left her blouse unbuttoned at the collar, maintaining the illusion of a woman losing her grip on reality.

When they walked down to Evan’s luxury SUV, Margaret noticed a black sedan parked two blocks away. Lena Ortiz was in position.

The trap was set.
