Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Trap

The executive conference room on the top floor of Vanguard Wealth Management was spectacular. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the financial district.

Mr. Harrison, a conservative, gray-haired financial advisor who had managed Margaret’s wealth for twenty years, sat at the head of the table. He looked deeply uncomfortable.

"Margaret, thank you for coming," Mr. Harrison said, his eyes scanning her uncharacteristic appearance. "Evan and Claire called me last week expressing deep concerns about your... cognitive health. They’ve presented a medical evaluation framework, and today we are looking at the execution of a total Power of Attorney."

"Yes, Arthur," Margaret said, her voice shaky. She sat between Claire and Evan. "Everything is so blurry lately. Evan says I shouldn't worry about the numbers anymore."

"She’s been forgetting to pay the property taxes, Arthur," Evan lied smoothly, pushing a thick stack of legal documents across the mahogany table. "And just this morning, she broke glassware and couldn't remember what day of the week it was. It’s heartbreaking, but Claire and I need full transactional authority immediately to prevent any financial mistakes."

Arthur Harrison sighed, looking at Margaret. "Margaret, you realize that signing this specific document grants Evan and Claire total control over your estate? They can sell this house, liquidate your stocks, and make all medical decisions without your prior consent."

"She knows, Arthur. We’ve discussed it," Claire said defensively, her cheeks flushing. "We’re doing this for her own good!"

"I want... I want what's best," Margaret whispered, picking up the heavy gold pen Evan slipped into her hand.

"Excellent," Evan murmured, his eyes locked on the signature line. His breath grew shallow with excitement. Millions of dollars were just a few strokes of a pen away. "Right there, Margaret. Just sign 'Margaret Vance' on the line with the yellow tab."

Margaret lowered the pen. Her hand shook violently. She brought the nib down to the paper, began to write the letter 'M', and then suddenly stopped.

"Wait," Margaret said, her voice shifting. The shakiness evaporated. The glaze over her eyes vanished, replaced by a crystalline, terrifying sharpness. She dropped the pen. It rolled across the polished wood.

Evan frowned, his smile faltering. "Margaret? What are you doing? Sign the paper."

"You know, Evan," Margaret said, leaning back comfortably in her leather chair. She crossed her legs, her posture suddenly radiating supreme authority. "For a man who spent two years planning how to steal my estate, you really are incredibly sloppy."

The room went dead silent.

Claire blinked, confused. "Mom? What are you talking about?"

"Arthur," Margaret said, looking directly at her financial advisor. "Are the security cameras in this boardroom recording both video and audio, as required by your firm’s compliance policy?"

"Yes, Margaret. Every second," Arthur said, his eyes widening as he realized the woman sitting before him was completely, unequivocally lucid.

"Good," Margaret smiled. She reached into her beige jacket and pulled out her smartphone, pressing play on an audio recording.

“It’s working. I mean... she’s really not well today.” Claire’s recorded voice filled the boardroom. “Which is exactly why we need to protect her, darling... Just do exactly what I tell you today...” Evan’s voice followed.

Evan’s face drained of color. He stood up, knocking his chair back. "What is the meaning of this theater? You’re clearly experiencing a manic episode—"

"Sit down, Evan," Margaret snapped. The raw power in her voice was like a physical blow. "Or would you prefer to explain to Arthur, and the police officers waiting outside, exactly why you paid a waiter at Le Petit Miroir last night to spike my drink with a toxic cocktail of scopolamine and flunitrazepam?"

Claire gasped, her eyes flying open. "What?!"

"Oh, yes, Claire," Margaret said, turning a cold, disappointed gaze upon her daughter. "Your husband poisoned me. And you sat there, checked in on me via text, and prayed the drug would wipe my mind clean enough so I’d sign this paper today."

"I... I didn't know about any poison!" Claire shrieked, instantly turning on Evan. "Evan! You told me it was just a mild sedative to make her look confused! You said it was harmless!"

"Shut up, Claire!" Evan roared, his composure completely shattering. He glared at Margaret with pure hatred. "You old bitch. You think you’re smart? You have no proof! You drank the wine! It’s in your system! You’re going to look insane when the blood tests come back!"

"Actually," Margaret said softly, tapping her fingers on the table. "I didn't drink a drop. But the state forensic lab currently has the contaminated glass, the bottle you gave the server, and a full chemical readout signed by two corporate witnesses."

Right on cue, the heavy boardroom doors swung open. Detective Lena Ortiz walked in, flanked by three uniformed officers.

"Evan Vale," Lena said, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for attempted felony assault, administration of a restricted toxic substance, and grand larceny by fraud. Hands behind your back."
