Chapter 4 - The Paper Trail of Greed

While Sarah rested under the strict supervision of the hospital staff, Daniel and Marcus Sterling locked themselves in a secure office downtown.
The table was covered in financial spreadsheets, property deeds, and corporate organizational charts. Marcus’s federal contact, Special Agent Catherine Reyes of the Financial Crimes Task Force, sat across from them, her laptop open to an encrypted database.
"The recording is powerful, Daniel," Agent Reyes said, playing a five-second clip of Arthur’s voice. "But in a high-stakes trial, a skilled defense team will argue that it was edited, or that the context was misunderstood. To make this an open-and-shut case, we need to prove the motive. We need to show the jury exactly why Arthur and Jason Morrison wanted Sarah and her baby out of the picture."
"It's the inheritance trust," Daniel said, pointing to a document on the table. "Sarah’s mother, Evelyn Morrison, left a trust worth forty million dollars. According to the original will, the trust was supposed to be divided equally between Sarah and Jason on Sarah’s thirty-first birthday—which is next month."
"But there's a catch," Marcus added, pulling out a secondary document. "Evelyn’s will had a very specific codicil. If either sibling had a child before the distribution date, that child would inherit a primary ten-million-dollar share of the trust immediately, reducing the shares of the surviving siblings. If Sarah’s baby wasn't born... or if Sarah didn't survive... Jason and Arthur would retain control of the entire forty million through their family holding company."
Agent Reyes leaned forward, her eyes narrowing. "And there’s more. We’ve been auditing the Morrison Holding Company’s accounts. Arthur’s real estate empire is a house of cards. He took out massive commercial loans for a luxury development in Brooklyn that has been stalled for three years due to environmental violations. He’s been using his investors' money to pay off his old debts. It's a classic Ponzi scheme, Daniel. He desperately needs that forty-million-dollar trust next month to keep his company from collapsing and going to federal prison."
"So they didn't just want to keep the money," Daniel said, the realization hitting him like a physical blow. "They needed it. If Sarah’s baby was born, the ten-million-dollar payout would have triggered an automatic audit of the trust’s assets. An audit that would have revealed Arthur had already been illegally borrowing from the trust to fund his stalled developments."
"Exactly," Agent Reyes said. "The birth of your son wouldn't just reduce their inheritance. It would have exposed Arthur’s entire financial fraud. They pushed her down those stairs to save themselves from a federal indictment."
Daniel closed his eyes, his chest tight. The depth of the depravity was staggering. They were willing to sacrifice his wife and his unborn child just to protect their fraudulent lifestyle.
"We have enough to arrest them," Daniel said, opening his eyes.
"We have enough for a financial indictment," Reyes corrected him. "But if we arrest them now, they’ll be out on bail within an hour. They’ll use their resources to hide evidence, intimidate witnesses, and possibly flee the country on their private jet. We need to catch them in the act of trying to destroy the evidence. We need to lure them into a trap."

"How?" Daniel asked.
Marcus looked at Daniel, a serious, grave expression on his face. "The recording, Daniel. They know you have it. And they know that as long as that recording exists, they are dead in the water. We are going to let them think they have a chance to steal it back."
