Chapter 3 - The Threat in the Lobby

By the next morning, the rain had stopped, but the dark clouds still hung heavy over Manhattan.
Daniel had spent the night in a chair beside Sarah's bed, holding her hand every time she whimpered in her sleep. At 8:00 AM, he stepped out to the hospital lobby to get a cup of coffee and clear his head. The adrenaline of the previous night had faded, replaced by a cold, calculating exhaustion.
As he walked toward the hospital’s main entrance, he spotted a familiar, sleek black town car parked at the curb.
The rear door opened, and Arthur Morrison stepped out.
He wasn't wearing his casual cashmere today. He was in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, looking every bit the powerful real estate mogul. Beside him was a man carrying a heavy leather briefcase—Robert Vance, the Morrison family’s notorious chief corporate fixer and attorney.
Daniel’s blood boiled. He intercepted them in the lobby, blocking their path to the elevators.
"You have a lot of nerve showing up here," Daniel said, his voice low and dangerous.
Arthur didn't flinch. He looked at Daniel with a cold, patronizing pity. "Daniel, don't be childish. We are here to see my daughter. We brought her favorite flowers, and Robert has some standard medical release forms for you to sign so we can transfer her to a private clinic in upstate. The care here is... adequate, but the Morrisons deserve the best."
"She’s not going anywhere with you," Daniel said, his voice rising slightly, drawing the attention of the security guard near the desk. "And you’re not getting anywhere near her."
Robert Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses. "Mr. Ward, I suggest you lower your voice and listen carefully. We understand that emotions are running high. Accidents happen. But a public scene will only damage Sarah’s recovery and, frankly, your own financial future. We are prepared to offer you a very generous settlement. A trust fund for the child, a fully paid townhouse in Connecticut, and five million dollars in liquid assets. In exchange, we just need you to sign a standard non-disclosure agreement regarding the... incident at the house."
Daniel let out a bitter, disbelieving laugh. "Five million dollars? You think you can buy your way out of a murder attempt?"
"It wasn't a murder attempt, Daniel," Arthur said smoothly, leaning in close. His voice dropped to a chilling whisper. "It was a clumsy fall. Jason was trying to help her. That is what the police report will say. That is what the hospital records will reflect. And if you try to say otherwise, Daniel, we will ruin you. We will tie you up in court until you are bankrupt. We will make sure you never work in this city again. And when Sarah is discharged, we will use our resources to prove you are an unfit father and take that child from you."
The threat was explicit. It was the same tactic Arthur had used for decades to silence business rivals, tenants, and even his own wife before she passed away.
But Daniel didn't back down. He felt a sudden, profound clarity. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his own phone, showing Arthur a screen that displayed the audio file metadata.
"I don't need your five million dollars, Arthur," Daniel said, his voice steady and cold. "Because I have the recording."
Arthur’s eyes flickered, a sudden, sharp tension tightening the corners of his mouth. "What recording?"
"The one Sarah’s phone made when she fell," Daniel said, stepping closer until he was inches from Arthur’s face. "The one where Jason brags about pushing her. The one where you tell him to clean up the papers and make sure it looks like she slipped so she won't get her mother’s inheritance. It's already uploaded to three secure cloud servers. It's already in the hands of federal investigators."
Robert Vance’s face turned pale. He looked at Arthur, his professional composure completely shattered. "Arthur... if that's true..."
Arthur’s eyes darkened into a look of pure, unadulterated hatred. The aristocratic mask was gone, replaced by the face of a cornered beast. "You think that little toy will save you, Daniel? In this city, judges have price tags. Investigators have families. If you play this card, I will burn your life to the ground. I will make sure you and Sarah have nothing left."
"Try me," Daniel whispered. He turned to the hospital security guard. "Officer! These men are harassing a patient’s family. Please escort them out of the building."
The guard, seeing the tension and Daniel’s bloodshot eyes, stepped forward. "Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to leave the premises."

Arthur glared at Daniel one last time. "This isn't over, boy," he spat, before turning on his heel and walking out, Vance scurrying behind him.
Daniel watched them go, his hands shaking but his heart filled with a terrifying, absolute certainty. The war had officially begun.
