Chapter 6 - A Toast Worth Making

One year later.
The sun was setting over the ocean, casting a golden-rose hue across the coastal gardens of a private estate. Long wooden tables were decorated with wild blooms, soft candle lanterns, and simple, breathtaking elegance.
There were eighty guests present—only our closest friends, family, and true allies.
I stood in front of the archway draped in white jasmine, wearing an exquisite dress designed and sewn by my mother. It was simple, timeless, and perfectly crafted.
Standing across from me was Ethan. His eyes were shiny with emotion as he held my hands.
“When I first met Sophie,” Ethan said, his voice echoing warmly through the quiet evening air as he made his vow, “I saw a woman who possessed incredible intelligence, unwavering integrity, and a heart that protects those she loves at all costs. Sophie, you don't just stand up for what is right—you build something beautiful out of the ruins of what was wrong. I promise to stand by you, honor you, and love you as your equal, every day of my life.”
When the ceremony concluded and we walked back up the aisle as husband and wife, the applause was genuine, loud, and full of real love.
Later that evening, as dinner was served, my mother stood up and tapped her glass lightly with a spoon.
The crowd went quiet, smiling warmly as she took the floor.
Elena looked around the room, her gaze resting on Ethan and then on me. Her chin was high, her eyes sparkling with joy.
“Many of you know our story,” Elena spoke softly, her voice carrying a calm power that commanded the room. “You know that my daughter and I came from humble beginnings. For a long time, people who measured worth by money and titles thought we were poor.”
She paused, looking at me with unconditional pride.
“But true wealth is not found in luxury cars, offshore accounts, or grand titles,” my mother continued. “True wealth is found in integrity. It is found in character, in honesty, and in the strength to stand tall when people try to make you feel small.”
She raised her champagne glass high.
“To my daughter, Sophie, who walked away from a nest of vipers to build a paradise of her own. And to Ethan, who recognized her true value from the very start. To love, to honor, and to family—the kind that is built on truth.”

“To love!” the guests cheered in unison, raising their glasses into the night sky.
I leaned my head against Ethan’s shoulder as he wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me close. Looking across the table at my mother, whose smile was brighter than all the chandeliers in the world, I knew I had finally found where I truly belonged.
