Chapter 4 - The Day of Reckoning
Two weeks later, the federal indictment was officially unsealed.
The courthouse steps were packed with news reporters, camera crews, and curious onlookers. The scandal had gripped the nation—a high-society family brought down by fraud, arrogance, and their own hubris.
I walked up the courthouse steps beside Ethan Vance, dressed in a sharp tailor-made charcoal suit. Behind us came Elena, looking radiant and elegant in an emerald green coat of her own design.
A black SUV pulled up to the curb, and federal agents escorted Richard and Preston Vale out in handcuffs. Caroline followed closely behind with their criminal defense lawyers, covering her face from the flashing cameras.
As they were led past us, Preston caught my eye. The arrogance in his gaze was completely gone, replaced by profound terror.
“Sophie...” he whispered as he passed.
I didn't answer. I didn't need to.
Inside the courtroom, the evidence was presented with brutal precision. Ethan and I had spent hundreds of hours documenting every hidden transaction, every altered balance sheet, and every illegal wire transfer.
When the judge asked Richard Vale how he pleaded to fourteen counts of wire fraud, bank fraud, and conspiracy, his lawyer quietly stepped forward: “Guilty on all counts, Your Honor.”
Preston, who had tried to claim ignorance, was presented with emails bearing his explicit signature approving fraudulent loan applications. His plea deal fell apart on the spot.
The judge’s ruling was swift and uncompromising:
Richard Vale: 12 years in federal prison and full restitution.
Preston Vale: 5 years in federal prison for complicity and signing fraudulent financial documents.
Vale Enterprises: Forced asset liquidation to pay off creditors, including Vanguard Holding Corp.

As the judge slammed the gavel down, Caroline slumped into her seat, weeping hysterically. The luxury, the prestige, the country club memberships, and the 500 elite friends who had laughed at their wedding toast were all gone.
