Chapter 5 - Rising from the Ashes

Six months later.
The historic downtown building that once housed the flagship Vale boutique had undergone a total transformation. The cold, sterile, overpriced luxury aesthetic was replaced by warm wood, natural sunlight, glass displays, and elegant greenery.
A grand new sign hung above the entrance: ELENA VANCE DESIGN HOUSE & CRAFT INCUBATOR.
My mother had taken the liquidated assets and converted the property into a high-end ethical fashion enterprise. She provided fair wages, master craftsmanship training, and workspace for local artisans and seamstresses who had long been overlooked by major fashion houses.
On opening night, the street outside was packed. But this wasn't the shallow crowd of the Vale wedding. These were real creators, ethical investors, journalists, and genuinely proud members of the community.
I stood on the second-floor balcony overlooking the bustling grand floor, holding a glass of sparkling water.
“A penny for your thoughts?” a voice asked softly behind me.
I turned to see Ethan Vance walking up, holding two glasses. He looked incredibly handsome in a dark navy blazer, his sharp eyes filled with warmth.
Over the last six months of working side by side through the legal and financial aftermath, Ethan and I had grown close. Where Preston had been insecure, manipulative, and shallow, Ethan was grounded, brilliant, and fiercely supportive of both me and my mother.
“I was just thinking about how far we’ve come,” I said, smiling. “Six months ago, I was sitting at a wedding table listening to people mock my mother.”
“And now,” Ethan said, looking down at Elena below, who was currently being interviewed by a major fashion magazine, “she’s standardizing the future of ethical fashion in this city, and you’re running one of the most respected forensic firms in the state.”
“We couldn't have done it without a good lawyer,” I teased gently.

Ethan stepped closer, his gaze gentle and earnest. “You didn't need a lawyer, Sophie. You’re a force of nature all on your own. But... I’m very glad I got to be along for the ride.”
He took my hand—not with force or possessiveness, but with profound respect. My heart fluttered, a sweet, clear feeling I hadn't felt in a very long time.
