Chapter 5 - The Crucible of Truth

Nicolás didn't waste a single second. He dove across the floor, grabbing the detonator and securing the safety switch before Leonor could crawl toward it.

The matriarch lay on the concrete, her expensive clothes torn, her pearls scattered like broken teeth around her. She looked up at Sofía with pure, unfiltered hatred. "You... you miserable, insignificant cockroach..."

"Secure her," Nicolás ordered Alejandro, his voice shaking with a terrifying mix of adrenaline and relief. "Take her to the federal authorities. I have enough evidence of domestic terrorism, child endangerment, and cartel collusion to ensure she spends the rest of her life in a maximum-security prison cell. She will never see the light of day again."

As the guards dragged a screaming, cursing Leonor away, Nicolás walked over to the SUV. He reached in, grabbing Sofía by the waist and pulling her out of the vehicle and into his arms. He held her so tightly it was hard to breathe, burying his face in her neck as the rain poured through the shattered roof above them.

"You are insane," he whispered against her skin, his voice thick with uncharacteristic emotion. "You could have been killed."

"I couldn't let her hurt him, Nicolás," Sofía replied, her arms wrapping around his neck. "And I couldn't let her hurt you."

He pulled back, looking down at her beautiful, rain-streaked face. In the middle of a dark, bloody warehouse, surrounded by the ruins of his past, he felt a profound sense of peace. The lie of his bloodline no longer mattered. The empire didn't matter. The only thing that was real was the woman in his arms and the boy waiting for them at home.

"Let’s go home," he said softly.

When they returned to the Velasco mansion, the first rays of dawn were breaking through the clouds, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink.

The explosives Leonor had bragged about were found and safely dismantled by Nicolás’s bomb squad. Valeria had been handed over to the police, weeping and signing a full confession in exchange for a reduced sentence.

Sofía rushed straight up to the nursery. The guard, Hector, opened the door immediately.

Inside the simple, cotton-lined bassinet, Mateo was just waking up. He let out a small, soft yawn, stretching his tiny arms. His skin was completely clear, the angry red chemical burns replaced by healthy, soft baby skin.

When he saw Sofía, his little face lit up, and he let out a joyful, bubbling giggle, reaching his hands toward her.

Sofía felt tears sting her eyes as she lifted him into her arms, pressing a soft kiss to his forehead. "You're safe now, my love. No one is ever going to hurt you again."

Nicolás stepped into the nursery, his dark suit replaced by a simple, plain cotton shirt—washed with the same unscented hospital soap Sofía used. He approached them slowly, as if afraid he might break the fragile magic of the moment.

"Can I?" he asked, his voice uncharacteristically tentative.

Sofía smiled gently, carefully transferring the baby into his massive, powerful arms.

Mateo didn't cry. He looked up at Nicolás with large, curious gray eyes—eyes that, by a beautiful twist of fate, looked exactly like his father's, despite the lack of biological blood. The baby reached up, his tiny, soft fingers curling around Nicolás’s thumb.

Nicolás closed his eyes, a single, silent tear slipping down his cheek. He had conquered empires, killed enemies, and amassed billions, but holding his healthy, smiling son in his arms was the only true victory he had ever known.

He looked over at Sofía, who was watching them with a warmth that made the entire mansion feel alive for the very first time.

"I don't know how to be a normal father, Sofía," Nicolás admitted, his voice raw and honest. "I don't know how to live a life that isn't surrounded by shadows and walls."

Sofía stepped closer, wrapping her hands around his arm, leaning her head against his shoulder. "You don't have to figure it out alone, Nicolás. We’ll teach each other."
