Chapter 2 - Shadows in the Mansion

The sound of shattering glass and echoing gunshots turned the luxury mansion into a war zone within seconds.

Nicolás moved with lethal, practiced speed. In one fluid motion, he drew a matte-black pistol from beneath his jacket and shoved Sofía behind his broad frame. "Get back to the nursery. Lock the door. Do not open it for anyone but me."

"Nicolás—"

"Go!" he roared, his voice leaving no room for argument.

Sofía ran back into the nursery, slamming the heavy oak door and throwing the deadbolt. Inside, Valeria was trembling, clutching Mateo to her chest as the baby began to wail, terrified by the sudden noise.

"What's happening? Are we being attacked?" Valeria cried, her voice hysterical. "Is it the rival families? The Santoronis?"

"Stay down, Valeria! Away from the windows!" Sofía commanded, her adrenaline taking over. She dragged a heavy velvet armchair across the floor, wedging it firmly under the doorknob. She then rushed to Valeria, taking Mateo into her arms. The moment the baby felt Sofía’s touch and the clean cotton sheet, his frantic cries began to subside into soft whimpers.

Downstairs, the battle was short and brutal. Nicolás’s private security force was elite, but the attackers hadn't come to conquer; they had come to send a message.

By the time Nicolás reached the foyer, three masked gunmen lay dead on the imported Persian rugs. Standing near the shattered stained-glass entrance was his second-in-command, Alejandro, holding a bleeding shoulder.

"They breached the perimeter from the east gate, boss," Alejandro gasped, gritting his teeth in pain. "They weren't trying to take the house. They threw this."

Alejandro pointed to a heavy, wax-sealed burlap sack on the floor. It was dripping with dark, viscous blood.

Nicolás approached it, his expression cold. With the toe of his leather shoe, he tipped the bag over. Inside was the severed head of the driver who had delivered the German fabric conditioner to the mansion earlier that week. Pinned to the man's forehead with a silver dagger was a note written in elegant calligraphy:

“A child’s skin is delicate, Nicolás. But an empire is even easier to tear apart. Keep the nurse. She won't save you from what’s coming.”

Nicolás stared at the note, his eyes narrowing into slits. It wasn't signed, but he recognized the silver dagger. It belonged to the Santoroni family—the ruthless syndicate that controlled the northern ports, a territory Nicolás had been systematically seizing over the past year.

But how did the Santoronis know about the nursery? How did they know about Sofía?

A chilling realization washed over him. There was a mole inside his inner circle. Someone had leaked the details of Mateo’s illness and Sofía’s sudden arrival.

"Clean this up," Nicolás ordered Alejandro, his voice dropping to a deadly whisper. "Lock down the estate. No one leaves. No one enters. Double the guards on the nursery wing. And find my mother."

"Your mother left twenty minutes ago, boss," Alejandro reported, wincing as a medic began to tend to his shoulder. "She took her private vehicle. Said she couldn't stay in a house where she was insulted by a commoner."

Nicolás’s grip on his gun tightened until his knuckles cracked. Convenient, he thought. She leaves right before the shooting starts.

Upstairs, the nursery door rattled. Sofía held her breath, gripping a heavy metal floor lamp she had picked up as a weapon.

"Sofía. It's me. Open the door."

Hearing Nicolás’s voice, she quickly moved the armchair and unlocked the bolt. Nicolás stepped inside, his suit jacket gone, his white shirt stained with a drop of blood that didn't belong to him.

Valeria immediately rushed to him, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Nicolás, thank God you're safe! We have to leave this place. We have to go to the penthouse in Miami!"

Nicolás gently but firmly untangled himself from Valeria’s grip. His eyes never left Sofía, who was standing by the bassinet, her eyes wide but her hands steady as she held Mateo.

"We aren't going anywhere," Nicolás said, his voice quiet but absolute. "The mansion is the most secure fortress I own. Moving Mateo now would risk exposing him to unwashed environments. He stays here. With Sofía."

Valeria’s face contorted with a mixture of grief and jealousy. She looked between Nicolás and Sofía, noticing the unspoken intensity passing between them. For seven weeks, Nicolás had barely looked at her, his mind consumed by business and grief. But in less than twenty-four hours, this penniless nurse had commanded his full attention.

"And what about me?" Valeria asked, her voice cracking. "I am his mother, Nicolás! But he cries when I hold him! He only wants her!"

"He wants safety, Valeria," Sofía said gently, stepping forward. "He associates your perfume, your silk robes, and the jewelry you wear with the burning on his skin. If you want to hold him, you need to strip away the luxury. Wash with hospital soap. Wear plain cotton. No makeup, no perfume, no gold."

Valeria looked down at her diamond rings and her designer robe. To a woman raised in high society, her appearance was her armor. Asking her to strip it away was like asking her to become invisible.

"I... I can't live like a peasant," Valeria whispered, backing away, her eyes flashing with resentment. "This is insane. You're brainwashing him, Nicolás! You're letting this woman take over our lives!"

Unable to handle the emotional weight, Valeria stormed out of the nursery, leaving a heavy silence in her wake.

Sofía sighed, placing Mateo back into his cotton-lined bassinet. "She's grieving, Nicolás. Don't be too hard on her."

"I don't have time for her vanity," Nicolás said, walking closer to Sofía. He stood so close she could smell the faint scent of rain, gunpowder, and cedar clinging to him. He reached out, his large, calloused hand gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from her face. "You didn't flinch when the shots fired. Most people would have been screaming."

"When you work the night shift at the public hospital in the poorest sector of the city, gunshots are just background noise," Sofía replied, looking up into his piercing gray eyes. "You learn to keep your hands steady, because if you shake, the patient dies."

Nicolás’s thumb traced her jawline, a sudden, fierce tenderness breaking through his hardened exterior. "You are a remarkable woman, Sofía Reyes. A dangerous one, too."

"Dangerous? Me?" She managed a small, breathless laugh.

"Yes," Nicolás murmured, his face dipping closer to hers. "Because for the first time in my life, I am looking at someone and realizing there is something more important to me than my empire."

Before Sofía could process his words, his lips met hers. The kiss was explosive—a desperate, passionate collision of two entirely different worlds. It tasted of danger, relief, and a deep, buried hunger that both of them had tried to deny. Sofía melted into his embrace, her hands gripping his shoulders as the chaos of the night faded into nothingness.

When he finally pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily.

"I will protect you, Sofía," Nicolás whispered, his eyes burning with an obsessive intensity. "You and Mateo. No matter what it takes."

But as Sofía looked past his shoulder toward the window, she saw a tiny, blinking red light hidden inside the smoke detector. A hidden camera.

They were being watched.
