Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Bloodline

The rain poured down in sheets over the northern docks of Mexico City. Heavy shipping containers loomed like giant iron tombs in the darkness, the black waves of the harbor crashing violently against the concrete piers.
Nicolás’s black armored SUV pulled up to the perimeter of Warehouse 14, its headlights cutting through the downpour. Inside, Sofía sat in the backseat, her medical bag gripped tightly in her lap. Beside her, Nicolás was checking the magazine of his automatic rifle, his movements calm, precise, and lethal.
"Stay in the vehicle, Sofía," he said, not looking up. "The chassis is reinforced with military-grade armor. Even a grenade won't pierce it. If I don't return in thirty minutes, Alejandro has orders to fly you and Mateo out of the country to New Zealand."
Sofía reached across the console, her warm hand wrapping over his cold fingers. "You are coming back, Nicolás. Mateo is waiting for his father."
Nicolás looked at her hand, then up into her eyes. The ruthless cartel kingpin vanished for a brief second, replaced by a man who had finally found his anchor. He leaned across the seat, pressing a deep, possessive kiss against her lips. "Wait for me," he whispered.
He slipped out into the rain, vanishing into the shadows along with Alejandro and a dozen heavily armed men.
Inside the warehouse, the air was thick with the scent of saltwater and rust.
Doña Leonor sat on a pristine leather chair that had been brought specifically for her, sipping tea from a porcelain cup. Across from her sat Don Santoroni, an elderly man with a scarred face and a cane topped with a silver wolf's head. Around them stood twenty cartel soldiers, rifles raised.
"Your son is late, Leonor," Don Santoroni said, checking his diamond-encrusted watch. "My men were supposed to have liquidated him at the mansion hours ago."
"Nicolás is stubborn, Don Santoroni," Leonor said, her voice dripping with venom. "He has survived three assassination attempts in his life. But tonight, he is distracted by a sick child and a penniless nurse. He will come here to find me. And when he does, your men will finish him."
"And the shipping routes?"
"The moment Nicolás is dead, I will assume temporary control of Velasco International as Mateo’s legal guardian. The northern ports will be signed over to you by sunrise."
"A beautiful plan," a voice echoed from the rafters.
Suddenly, the warehouse lights slammed off, plunging the space into pitch blackness.
Shouts of panic erupted from the Santoroni soldiers. Flashlights flickered on, beams of light cutting wildly through the darkness. Then, the gunfire began.
It wasn't a chaotic firefight; it was an execution. Nicolás’s men moved like ghosts, using night-vision optics and silenced weapons. One by one, Santoroni’s guards dropped to the concrete floor without a sound.
"Guard the doors! Guard the old woman!" Don Santoroni screamed, drawing a gold-plated pistol.
Before his bodyguard could step forward, a heavy iron chain swung from the ceiling, wrapping around the man's neck and dragging him into the darkness above.
A single spotlight snapped back on, illuminating the center of the warehouse.
Nicolás stood there, drenched in rain, his rifle resting casually over his shoulder. His eyes were fixed entirely on Leonor.
"The tea is getting cold, Mother," Nicolás said, the word mother dripping with mockery.
Leonor stood up, her face pale but her aristocratic pride intact. "Nicolás. You always were a cockroach. Hard to kill."
"I survived the slums you dragged me out of, Leonor," Nicolás replied, walking forward, his boots clicking heavily against the wet floor. "Did you really think a few hired thugs from a dying syndicate could finish what you started?"
Don Santoroni raised his gold pistol, aiming it at Nicolás’s head. "You talk too much, boy—"
Thwack.
A silver dagger flew through the air, embedding itself directly into Don Santoroni’s throat. The old cartel boss gasped, his eyes wide with shock as he dropped to his knees, clutching his neck before collapsing face-first onto the concrete. Alejandro stood in the shadows, lowering his throwing hand.
The remaining Santoroni soldiers threw down their weapons, realizing they were completely outmatched.
Leonor was left standing alone, surrounded by the bodies of her allies. Yet, she didn't beg for mercy. Instead, she let out a cold, manic laugh.
"You think you've won, Nicolás? You think that pathetic nurse can save your precious bastard?" Leonor sneered, pulling a small detonator from her purse. "The mansion is rigged with plastic explosives. The moment my thumb leaves this button, the entire west wing—including the nursery—becomes ash."
Nicolás stopped dead in his tracks. His heart hammered violently against his ribs. For all his power, his wealth, and his cruelty, he was completely paralyzed.
"You wouldn't," Nicolás whispered, his voice trembling for the first time in his life. "Mateo is your grandson."
"He is a tool that failed me!" Leonor shrieked. "If I cannot have the Velasco empire, no one will! Drop your weapon, Nicolás, or I release the button!"
Nicolás slowly lowered his rifle, his mind racing, looking for a solution that didn't exist. He was too far away to disarm her before her thumb slipped.
Suddenly, a loud, heavy crash echoed from the back of the warehouse.
The armored SUV smashed through the weak corrugated iron wall, skidding across the concrete floor and slamming directly into the platform where Leonor stood.
The impact sent the matriarch flying through the air. The detonator slipped from her fingers, clattering across the floor.

The driver’s side door opened, and Sofía stepped out, her face pale but her eyes blazing with determination. She had climbed into the front seat and taken the wheel the moment she realized Nicolás was taking too long.
"I told you," Sofía gasped, catching her breath as she looked at a stunned Nicolás. "I'm protecting our family."
